A Chicago News man has heard a good story atthe expense of John J. Ingalis,the grim, saturnine senator from Kansas. One of bis constitutents, a rough-rooking fellow of the cowboy type, sent in his card to the senator, and seated himself in the marble room to await the Iwtter’s arrival. When Ingalis made his appearance, someone else engaged him in conversation. At its conelusion he started to re-enter the chamber, having apparently forgotten the purpose for which he had qattted it. At that moment the cowboy seized him.
“Be you a senator 1” he inquired.
Ingalis gently disengaged himself and answered with unueual dignity: “J have that honor, sir,”
“Do you know old Ingalls of Kan- sas.?” was the next interrogatory.
Ingalls shot a piercing look at the fellow to see ifhe was in earnest, He evidently satisfied himself on that point, for he answered immediately : “Oh, yes; we're very well acquaint-
ed.
By this time quite a crowd of sena- tors and senate employees had gather- ed arouad the two men.
“Well, then,” continned the visitor, “I wish you would tell him I am about tired of waiting for him, and if he doesn’t hurry out here pretty soon, I’ll make it----lively for him when his next election comes around.”
“Do you know Ingalls?’ inquired the Kansas senator, with a oonchalani air. “J do not,” was the response.
“Have you avy idea what he looks like?”
“No; but I'mtold he’s as ugly as the old Nick.”
“Do you suppose he is asuguly as I am?” was Ingall’s next interrogatory.
“Well I don’t know,” said the fel- low with great deliberation, “bat I expect you'd crowd him mighty close.”
At this point Mr. Ingalls made his eseape into the Senate chamber, trying to look responsive to the roars of laughter which followed him.
The constitnent has not had his inter- view yet.
