—It is said that wireless telegraphy will be used in the eventof a Transvaal campaign.

—Sir Wilfrid did believe inthe idea that whoever attacks the British lion musi reckon with the cube ;—buthe has been forced to see it.!

—Duncan Bole is now described as ‘the bero of West Elgin;” but his laurels fade when compared with those won by the “Noble Army of Workers” in North Water- loo.

—Orders have been "sent that the Queensland troops for South Africa must be despatched before October 31. This makes it look as if the middlecf Novems ber would see the British forces in shape for action, and, further, as if action was intended.

—An indication of the war office esti- mate of the curation of the South African campiign is given by the fact that the authorities have contracted for eight mooths’ supply of bread and other military requisites rendered necessary by the ab- sence of the bulk of the army service corps.

The London (England) Mail says :

If the present crisis has its dark, it has also it bright side. It has served to de- monstrates once more the passionate

loyalty of the colonies to the empire and tothe flsg. Offers of assistance have poured io from the daughter states which England has founded oversea. The great example set by New South Wales ip 1885, when a colonial regiment was despatched to the Soudan,is being followed everywhere. Canada has offered a regiment to be raised and moved at her own cost to the possible eeat of war; the Australian commandants are in cone clave, and 1,400 Victorians have already volunteered : New Zealand has tendered the help of 200 men. Thus thetruth of Sir Alfred Milner’s conclusion that the grievances of the Uitlanders concern not England alone, but the whole empire, is being clearly proved. This demonstra- tion of filial love and devotion England can never forget.’

This, as the “St. ‘tons Sun remarks, is all right except the clauses about Canada. The Dominion Premier has been busy at Chicago these few days laying corner stones, holding great Sunday receptions and talking about “the continent to which we belong.” But’before he went he ex- plained why no regiment was offered. What the Mail says about Victoria, New Zealand and the other eolonies ie true.

Rev GC Robertson, a former popular pastor of the Presbyterian church here, preached to a crowded house in the Cavendish hall on Sunday evening. The sermon, which was an exceedingly able and practical one,was founded’on Nathan’s words te David, “ Thou art the man.”

On Monday eveniug Mr Robertson gave alecture in the same place: Subject-- ““ The Battle of Life.” The lecture was a masterly effort, and more than susteined the Rev gentleman’s repu‘atlon as a plat~ form epeaker. The; Rev. Allan Simpson and others highly complimented the leo- turer. A‘hearty vote of thanks was re- sponded toin the Rev geutleman’s im- mediate style.
