A Coo. Turer.—One day last week, says the St. John Sun, a colored girl about 16 years old, named Mary Saunders, went into H. & N. B. Lewis’ shop at Yarmonth to buy some molasses. While the clerk was away getting the jug filled she stole a cash box con- taining $75, then got her molasses, paid for it and went out, The money was found to be missing and Chief Griffin arrested Saunders oa suspicion. She admitted her guilt and said she had spent about $15; the balance was recovered. She had made some purchases with the stolen money at the shop, she stole

Orrawa, May 8.

In the House this afternoon, Sir Charles moved a resolution giving the Government power to borrow twenty-five million dol- lars. He explained that five million dollars was needed to meet a floating debt in Lon- don ; six millions to meet amounts due for Railway subsidies. In this case, however, the policy of taking power to borrow a larger amount than was actually required, had been adhered to.

He then proceeded to discuss the debt in general, and argued that large as has been the increase in the debt during the past ten years, it was not nearly so large as it ap- peared on its face. In the first place, un- like other debts, it was incurred wholly for public works that were of great value. In the next place the construction of these public works had so increased our credit abroad that we were now able to borrow at three and a quarter per cent. standing third among the nations of the world in the matter of national credi’, He then proceeded to analyze the debt, and showed thatin a debt like ours it was not proposed to pay off in the near future, but to meet at maturity by issuing new bonds. It was really not the amount of debt but the amount of annual interest that was the measure of its burden on this country, Therefore, when it was proposed to alarm the country regarding the magni- tude of its debt, it_was amportant that the country should understand that its total net debt could be funded to-morrow if need be for the annual payment of interest on one hundred and seventy-five million dol- lars at the rate we apy a year.

Mr, Charlton, in the absence of Cart- wright, criticized Sir Charles’ statement, and argued that the debt was far too great, aud had been spent in constructing useless public works, The I. C. R., he said, could not be given away, and as to the P, E. I. Railway, it was worse than useless.

After recess the borrowing resolution was adopted and the House proceeded to the consideration of the resolution assuming the Lake St. Peter Debt>

A lively debate ensued, the Grits not going the length of opposing the resolution, but attempting to magnify the amount of the debt assumed.

Capt. Rawson, of the Royal Engineers, was examined before the Coroner’s jury in the investigation of the death of co who was killed on the eleetric light pole last week. His testimony went to show that the lamp was defective ; that any per- son who took hold of it would receive such a shock that death must be certain. a

Horse Notes.

THE CARRIAGE STALLION PHYSICIAN,

The handsome carriage stallion Physician, recently purchased in the United States by Mr. John Richards, Bideford, arrived in the steamer from Pictou last evening and is now at the Eureka Stables where he has already been seen and admired by a large number of prominent breeders and horse- men. Physician isa rich bay, stands 16 hands high, and weighs when in flesh, we should judge, about 1200 Ibs. He is very handsome and stylish, has a splendid set of legs and feet, pewerful back and lion, | and is, taken all inally a handsome specimen | of horseflesh. His breeding is fully equal | to his individuality, his sire being the horse | Edward Everett, sire of fourteen with | records from 2.18 to 2.30; and his dam the | noted mare Dolly Varden, the dam of | Eclipse 2.25 and Dr. Syntax 2.30. The! dam of Edward Everett was by imported Margrave, and Dolly Varden’s sire was imported Eclipse. It will thus be seen that Physician is very strong: in thorough- bred as well as in trotting lines, and should produce an excellent class of driving and saddle horses, and his mares should be valuable for brood purposes. Physician goes to Mr. Richard’s farm at Bideford in afew days, and will, we understand, be used among the farmers of the western section of the Island. We wish Mr. Richard's every success with his purchase.
