Lord Tollemache possesses about 35,000 acres of land in
| Cheshire,and it is a most striking testimony
to the value of his supervision that during the whole of the agricuitural depressien from 1877 to 1885, his lordship had neither a vacant farm uor a_tenent in atrears. His estate in Oheshirs has during his lifetime been cut up into farms of about 200 acres in extent, tis lordship comsidering that a thrifty farmer with sens and daughters could do excel- lently on a 200-acre farm, while they would suffer severely on a smatier holding. In order to break up his estate into farms of that size he built, or rebuilt, between 50 and 60 farmhouses at the cost of £148,000, each of these farms or homesteads costing Lord Follemache about £2,800. In addi- tien to this, Lord Tollemache has built no fewer than 260 cottages for the accommo- dation of his labourers.
