Parnell addressed a great meeting of tenant farmers at Ennis on Sunday, and set forth the line of policy he wished to see carried out in order to secure an early set- tlement of the land question. The main features of the programme are unanimity of action among the Irish members. independ- { ence of all political parties, refusal to pay more than what the tenant considers a fair rent, and social excommunication of any person taking a farm from whish another has been evicted for nonpayment of rent.

A Berlin despatch states that Nihilists have determined to change their tactics, and hereafter will devote their movements to political a siltation, expecting aif from Poland in case of war between Russia and Austria.

A new note embodying the foregoing has been communicatcd verbally to the Ambassador of the European Powers here.

An Augusta despatch says the election returns so far as received give Gov. Davis a plurality of about 200 votes. There are still several towns and plantations to hear frqm, and there are some discrepancies in the returns received by telegraph which make it difficult to ascertain the exact re- sult of the election. It is evident, how- ever, that the vote is close, and it is quite probable that only the official canvass of the returns will decide who is elected.

Ar a meeting ef the Law Society of Prince Edward Island, held at the Law Library, in Charlottetown, on Saturday, the 18th day of Septetnber, A. D., 1880, convened on occasion of the lamented death of the Hon. Sur Robert Hodgson, Knight, which event occurred at Charlotte- town, on the evening of Wednesday, the i5th September, instant. The Hon. John Longworth, Q. C., President of the So- ciety, being called to the chair, the follew- ing resolution was unanimously adopt- ed :—

Resolved, That the Law Society of Prince Edward Island, assembled together to follow the mortal remains ef the late Sir Robert Hedgson, Knight, to their final resting-place, desire to place on record their sympathy with the family of the deceased Knight, in this their recent bereavement, and further to express their high appreciation of the urbanity and efficiency with which, while maintaining the dignity he discharged the duties of the re- sponsible offices of Attorney General and Chief Justice of Prince Edward Island, held by him—the former for a period of over thirty years, and the latter of over twenty years.

During his long and eventful life, it was Sir Robert’s privilege and duty to fill at dif- ferent times nearly all of the more impertant offices in this Province, the highest of which the Lieutenant-Governorship, he received at the hands of his Sovereign, as a reward for nis long and faithful serviees, with the uni- versal good will and approval of his fellow countrymen.

The Law Society desire finally to record the profound respect which they entertain for the sterling integrity and uprightness of Sir Reb- ert’s character, and their pride that one who 30 worthily filled so many different respon- sible positions in his lifetime, and who has died amidst the universal regret and esteem of these in whose midst he lived, was a member of their profession, and for nearly all his long life detively engaged in the practice of the Law.

Ordered, That the foregoing Resolution be entered en the Records of the Society, and that copies thereof be respectfully transmitted by the President to the members of the family of the deceased Knight.

The Steam Pipes for heating extends throughout the entire build- ing and cost upwards of $1,000.
