The rapid growth of the cattle in- dustry On this continent is very re- markable. Twenty years ago $4,000,- 900 would have covered, says the Bulletin, the amount invested in cattle ranches in the United States, while now the investment is estimated at $100,- 000,000. In Canada, too, the develop- ment is scareely less noteworthy, antl in other countries agriculture has been superseded in many places by cattle raising, which is lowering and will-con- tinue to lower the price of beef.

In complimenting Mr. Bennet, of the Scottish Union & National, on his skil- ful management, Mr. Hine, of the N. ¥. Monitor, has a word of caution, as under: ‘We need hardly remind Brother Bennett of the instability of human affairs, and particularly of in- surance affairs, and to warn him against undue pride It was a faithful old deacon who said tothe new minister : ‘I hope the Lord will keep you humble, we will keep you poor;’ and if the fire insurance bysiness as it runs on the average in this country, and all over the world for that matter about these days, does not keep its responsible men both humble aad poor, we know of nothing that will,”

There is glut of money,almost every where. Bank reserves in New York are unusually large, in fact the banks of that city are burdened with a plethora of money that is earning nothing, which shows, in the opinion of the Shipping List, that whatever demand exists for the purposes of moving crops is more than supplied from the accumulation of funds at interior points, Although the outlook is favorable so far as the American crops are concerned, there is no development of commercial activity there sufficient to harden rates of either interest or discount. In Scot- land, according to the Edinburg Scots- man, the two per eent, hitherto allowed on deposits by the banks is to be at once reduced to 1} per cent.
