The earthquake whicn shocked Mont- real last week, has been productive of serious, aud in one instance, fatal, con- sequeoce. Henri Paquett of Bonsecourts street was talking toa couple of frieode in his place of business when the phenomenon made itself apparent. There died on Monday the young daugh- ter of a merchant on Craig street of convul- sions, fullowing the fright caused by the earthquake. The shocks threw her into a hysterical fit, which developed into convul- sions with fatal results. Quite a number of persons throughout the city are still suffering from the effects of the fright, and in one imstance, that of a lady, life is despaired of. The lae: shocks have had a tcrrible effect on people with weak nerves.

It is believed that every individual upon this earth is more or less an «xtact counter- ancestor, recent or remote, and is possible that even after an interval of many generations, or even centuries, individ- uals may be born whose physiognomy and general appearance is a replica of an ancestor of a long preceding period. In families it is sometimes observed that ali the children d«- not inherit the tastes and peculiarities of their parents, and in these cases it will probably be found that perhaps a grand parent or great grand parent,or an even more remote ancestor, has exhibited similar propensities and disposi-

tion to those of one child, whilst another may have inherited the peculiarities of a different ancestor. This perhaps applies more especial- ly to the mental, rather then the physical qualities, these latter more frequently being more or less counterparts of one or Other of the immediate parents. In some families the same type is apparcnt for many generations, as for instance in the House of Hapsburg, the reigning family of Austria, the upper lip has been abnormally thick for several centuries while the Jewish race has exhibited the exact well-known semitic physiognomy fer thous- ands of years; in fact there cat be little doubt that the Jewish type of contenance has remain- ed absolutely unaltered since the time of their Abraham. A proof of this i to be found in the sculptured figure ofa Jew in the temple Karnak in Upper Egypt, be- neath which is an inscription detailing the capture by Shisak, King of {Egypt, of the King of Judah, as related in the page® ol Scripture (2 Chronicles xii. 3-9, &c.) This sculpture is of the usual anc unmistakable Jewish type. And in the Bntish Museum in London may now be szen a large bas-relief in stone taken from the ruined palace of the Kings of Assyria, portraying the taking of the city Lachish by Sennacherib, as_ detailed in 2 Kings xviii. 13, 14; in which the Jewish captives are exact representations of the Jews of the present day. In those cases ‘where specially exceptional talents have been devel- oped it seldom happens that the immediate descendants inherit them in the same-degree, though probably in the majority of similar tal- ents though far less conspicuous, are transmit- ed. Amongst the most notable exceptions to this rule may be mentioned the Pitts, father and son, both of whom possessed very excep- tional powers of oratory and statesmanship.

It sometimes happens rhat physical and mental qualities of whole nat:ons deterioriate and become impaired. The Romans, for in- stance, at one time the bravest and boldest race then existing, after a course of increasing and enervating luxuriousness and vice, degen- ated into an effete and weakly nation, alto- gether unable to contend with the more man- ly races which attacked and defeated them with ease. Other nations toc might be men- tioned which in their more virile days excelled in the “tug-of-war,” but which do not appear to have inherited in the slightest degree the heroic valour of their predecessors.

And not physical and mental qualities only are transmitted from father to son, but alsc, by a strange law of nature, ifa man deliber- ately indulges in vice—intemperance and iniquities—his descendants from generation to generation suffer from his misdeeds, and are vitiated in both body and mind; the habitual drunkard probably begets a drunkard. and the man who has ruined his health by his vices condemns to a life ef misery not only his immediate descendants, but also perhaps their descendants for generativns, to come. He therefore not only destroys himself, Lut per- haps drags down to perdition untold thousands of his progeny; and as in thir’) generaticas (if we could imagine that this dispensation would last another thousand years) these would have numbered, assuming two children each throughout, no less than 1,610,612,73€, vast numbers of{whom would have been met.- tally and bodily contaminated by his vices, it is manifest that he is incurring an awful res- ponsibility in indulging in any such vice. And doubtless one of the chief torrents of the place of punishment will be the continued and incessant recriminations of those, who jn con- sequence of his vices which they have inherit- ed, one after another are continually descend, ing into those terriable realms.

But although it is decreed that this dreadful inheritance shall descend from generation to generation, yet whatever it be, happily for mankind, for those who wish it an absolute way of deliverance has beeu offered, by which that terrible tendency to sin can be altogether overcome and annihilated. That remedy, is the moral strength which is vouchsafed to all who with earnestness snpplicate the Ruler of all to endue them, and who in that Divine strength are enabled successfully to overcome and to conquer

Leading mar- kets and producing districts in this country and Canada report only a frac- tion of their usval stocks. Canada has, it is claimed, less than a tenth of its last year’ssupply. OUTRAGE IN IRELAND.

An extraordinary outrage, which took place at Kilbride, two miles from Tullamore, King’s county, Ireland, a few days ago, resulted in serious injuries to a Welsh emergency planter named Robt Owens, who has incurred a great deal of public odium by taking three farms on the Somers estate from which tenants were evicted, and who is constantly under the pro- tection of two constables and a sergeant of police. When Owens was passing through a gate on one of the farms a loud explosion occurred, and a quantity of scrap iron, stones and other material showered around him, in- juring him severely in the legs and back, and causing some slight cuts and abrasions to Sergeant Carrel, by whom he was accompan- ied. An iavestigation by the police disclosed that a most ingenious arrangement has been made fer carrying out the outrage. The iron bex of an axle-tree had been charged with powder, slugs, ete., and concealed in the ground immediatly ontside the gate and under the very spot on which a person must stand while undoing the fastening. The lock of an old } erse-pistol was used to ignite the charge, this being also coucealed in the ground and the trigger connected with the lower bar of the gate. The result was that the moment the gate was pushed in, the movement of the trigger caused the powder to explode. It is not expected that Owens’ injuries will prove fatal. Thisis the second attempt which has been made on his life, a bridge which he was in the habit of crossing having been cut two years ago, and two relatives of the evicted tenants having been imprisoned in connection with the outrage.
