Stark Raving Sane: On Stature

Why do strangers regularly comment about my height? It’s a strange social phenomenon, if you ask me. Really, do these same people approach total strangers and say, “My, you have curly hair!” It’s the same comment, if you ask me. The curly- haired person can do nothing about the texture of his or her hair, nor can I change my height. Well, I suppose that people can perm their hair, but there’s really nothing one ‘can do ‘about height. I have a feeling the

Maybe Pm just aeek sensi- - tive about it. I guess you don’t see a ~
lot of six-feet-tall: women. I’d bet
there’s not even a dozen of us on cam- ,
pus. I don’t know them all—it’s not
like we have an underground secret | can teach things that other people. ‘can’t and-get offered shotgun. a lot
sorority or something. If there was a sorority, though, we’d trade secrets about buying jeans that are long enough.
There was never a growth spurt, if you want to know. I never had to go through that—I was always tall. In grade six (age 11-12) I was five- foot-nine. Kids thought I was a teacher. Being the new kid and freak- ishly tall surprisingly didn’t screw me up too bad. I was called “Big Bird” in Junior High, which was really delight- ful. I truly wish I was low enough to
print the names of the jerks that made fun of me, but no, I have scruples (come talk to me in person, then it’s not immoral). Besides, I’m fairly sure all those idiots now have lucrative careers pumping gas or are on the lam in Mexico.
Back to the strangers attack- ing me—I suppose they think they’re complimenting me. Really, if they were appalled by my height, I strong-

when taking car trips. Unfortunately,
it is out of the ordinary for a woman to -
be over five-foot-ten, so I suppose I’m forever going to have to endure people thinking my parents are basketball players. It’s probably the same for guys who are over six-foot-four, but I’m just writing from my experience. If someone asked me if tomorrow if I’d rather be five-foot-nine, I’d say no. I’d change my. hair, if they offered, though.
The Sports is Over

Well sports fans another year of UPEI winter sports has come to an end. The men’s basketball team was defeated in the quarter-finals last Friday in Halifax as they fell to Memorial 67-64. I can’t give you any highlights of this great basketball game because I wasn’t there but I’m sure it was exciting and that the
men’s team gave.a gallant effort
against their foes from Newfoundland -.and- Labrador. The men finished the season with a 8-12 -win/loss record

finishing with a record of 5 wins and 15 losses for last place in the Nelson Division. The women’s volleyball team also failed to make the playoffs and finished their season with a 4 and 14 win/loss record for a second-last place finish in the AUS standings.
Finally the men’s hockey team, who finished fifth in the overall standings with a 12-11-3-2 record, was defeated in the quarter-final series with_-UNB 2 games.to 0 to end their best season in a few. years.
