It is said that Spain will at once prox claim an armistice in Cuba, and thar, eventually,Cuban independeuce will be de- clared. The details have yet to be worked out,

New York, April 6—-Antoine Varicle, of the French Geological Society, arrived on the French steamship La Bretagne yesterday, witha balloon, with which he intends to make the trip from Juneau to the Klondike. There are about a dozen persons in the partv, and they are all at the Hotel Martin. The balloon will carry about 7,300 pounds. The members of the expedition are stopping here only until news comes from Jonean that the appar« atus is :eady for generating the hydrogen with whieh the balloon isto be inflated. When thatis ready the party will godi- rectly to Jnneau, and if the wine is favor- able the trip tothe Klondike will be made at ence. The cost of the expedition is borne partly by the French geographical society and partly by the members of the party.

The Director of the U nited States Mint, trom information now ip his possession, etaies that there is substantial evidence that the world’s output of gold for the | calendar year 1897 will approximate, if it does not exceed, $240,000,000 in value, an increase of cloge to twenty percent over 1896. Of this total the United States produced approximately $61,5€0,000, an increase of $8,490,000 over 1896; Africa, $58,000,000, an increage of $13,600,000; Australia, $51,900,000, an in crease 0;' $6,800,000; Mexico, $10,900,000 an increase of $1,700,000; Canada, $7,500,000, an increase of $4,700,000; India, $7.560,600,an increate of $1,400,000 Russie, $25,000,009, an increase of $3- 560,000.

The i intications for the United Statee, says Director Preston, are that Colorado will lead in the production of gold for 1897, as it ie estimated by former Gover- nor Grant that it will not be Jess than $20,060,000.
