But today there is not a rail on the bridge, and a man nearly lo-t his life Jast fall bv this neglect. it is kept on hand, Sir, for another boodle before the election. There are other bridges for years now without a railing, and when the cross tires in therm get higher than the clay, there is a pece cut out of the middle so that carriages can pass by. So this is the way weare having our roads kep in repair. Mi.k carriers, peddlars, trackmen from the lobster factories, postmen end the travelling public all declare that they. never saw the roads in such a state, and make no secret in condemning them. True there was a gocd deal of money spent in this district four vears ago. But how yas itexpended? In opening out new roads and also private road~, jm some instances seventy or eighty chains being operied for a few private perrens and twelve dollars a chain given for the land ; to-day it is not opened to the public, neither is it fenced, and I am informed that a road over half a mile long was opened on the north side almost for private vse, and then the fencing of it was let by tender and had to be paid out of the treasury, so that 1t can be seen that our public roads do not bave the money expended on them, but is spent for electing our members. Our roads are harrowed up in such a manner by the road machine that it is a danger to travel after night without people being in danger of their lives. If youn want new roads opened out for boodling purposes you would do wellto invite some of those gentlemen to represent you.

POWNAL SCHOOL- The semi-annual examination of the Pownal School took place on Thursday, the 13th inst. The juntor departinent was the first visited. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers, etc. by the teacher, Miss Finlayson, and the children. The examination occupied all the forenoon, and was conducted by the principal, Mr. Jones, and the frustees. The reading and spelling was exceflent for such small children and the simultaneous reading was perfect. They were well up in geography, showed a good knowledge of the rudiments of grammar and were quick | 4 at mental arithmetic and working sums. 4 Tbe pupils acquitted themselves adnir- ably and reflected great credit on their teacher. Highly complimentary speeches were made by Mr. Albert Gay and the trustees, special reference being made to the perfect order maintained, ail agreeing that this was the bestexamination held for some years at least. Miss Finlayson is engaged for another term. In the afternoon the senior department was examined. Here as in the junior, the air was redolent with the perfume of fiowers. and the smiling faces that greeted us showed the pleasant relations existing between teacher and pupils. The ex- amination whieh was most thorough was conducted by Miss Finlayson, the Trustees, the Principal, and Mr. Robert Jones, etndent of the Prince of Wales College.
