He will take thera to Mansfield, Mass., and expects to get there on Thursday evening, 30th. As far as could be seen they were in good order. On the arrival of the train at Vortland, Me. they failed to connect, and had » remain over forty-eight hours tor the next jain. Thomas Edison, the great inventor, has bonded thirty thousand acres of nickel property in Sudbury district. His expert here says it is the richest mining*region in the world. Edison claims the new process he discovered will greatly cheapen the pro- ductien of nickel.

Mr. Hewitt, agent of the Kidderminster Manufacturing Co., ot England, had an interview with the Minister of Finance yesterday in reference to a proposal to start a branch manufactury in Canada. It is proposed to begin with the manufacture of Brussels carpets only, and to employ about 400 hands. The company has a capital of £300,000 sterling, and has in England 15,- 000 employes.

Failure in the Lobster Trade. Hauirax, Oct. 29.

John P. Chetwynd, of this city, who has been conducting business as a lobster packer and fish merchant on the Newfound- land coast, has assigned to William Roche, M. P. P. His liabilities are haavy.

Albert Gayton, M. P. P., has resigned his seat in the Legislature to accept the Registry of Deeds for Yarmouth Co.

Mrs. James Allen took a fit at 7 o’clock this morning and {ell into an open grate in her house. Her clothing caught fire, and in &a moment was ina mass of flames. A neighbor, hearing the alarm her children made, rushed in, and, stripping off his coat, extinguished her blazing clothes. The woman was terribly burned, and after great suffering, died in the afternron.

The Birchall Case.

Lonpon, Oct. 30, The books at Morley’s hotel show that Reginald Birchall, Mrs. Birchall and Col. Lewis—the latter supposed to be the Colonel who is the alleged author of the letter received by Birchall, in which the

Freexort, Le., Oct. 29, The brig Eugenie, owned and command- ed by Capt. Daniel Munroe, of Halifax, N.3S., 57 days out from Brazil, went ashore on the bar at Jones’ Iniet last night and has gone to pieces. The Captain and crew of six men were rescued by the crew of the Short Beach Life Saving Station. The Eugenie was insured for $4,000.

For the Seal Fishery.

Nort Sypney, Oct. 29. The schvouer Unibnama, owned by J. W. Peppett and Thomas Voght, of this town, and bound for British Columbia, intended for the seal fishery, left this afternoon at 3 o’clock under most favorable circumstances.

Western Notes.

(From the Farmer).

R. C. McLeod shipped another lot of live geese—1500 this time—for the United States on Monday morning. Mr. McLeod is under contract to forward a certain nutaber.

Monday afternoon the fine weather of the past few days gave way to cloudy skies, and in the evening rain began falling, which lace in the night came down heavily. By Tuesday morning the wind, which was blowing from a southwesterly direction, had increased toa gale. The tide was high at about eleven o'clock, and with the wind in the direction it was, the water reached a higher mark than it has for many years past. This, together with the force of the waves, did considerable damage to the wharves in the harbor. The shipping es- caped with scarcely any harm, although seme schooners at anchcr dragged some- what. The house at the west side of Queen’s wharf, used by Mr. Albert Gaudet as a lobster factory, was washed away and scattered along the breastwork. At the west end of the town a barn was washed down, as was the kitchen attached to the house, and the family had to move out. Holman’s wharf was damaged somewhat, and Muirhead’s wharf was also consider- ably injured as well. The causeway at the north end of Wilmot bridge, up the river, sustained considerable damage in the storm, and we learn that a breastwork Mr. Alex. Laird had built to prevent his land from washing away, went adrift and landed on top of the road at the north end of the bridge.
