THe race between the yachts Lmina, Carita and Clurvhel, took place yesterday. Mz, John J. Davis of the ‘‘ Rankin,” was appoint- ed referee, and at 2.40 o'clock the yachts made a start from Pownal wharf. The wind was blowing 38 W., witha hope of freshen- ing. The Clarabel got off first and stood to- wards Southport with the Hivma close to windward, while the Cari/a fouled her moor- ings and thereby lost two hundred yards, The Emme, in a light wind had the advantage of her opponents —they being much heavier m draft. She led and rapidly increased her lead until she passed the Block House, when the breeze strengthened slightly. Off Murphy’s Point the Carita gave the Clarabel the go-by. The Carit: and Clarabel now gave the Emma a lively chase to the St. Peter’s buoy, but she succeeded in passing it a quarter of a mile ahead of ( crifa and about twice that distance ahead of tlie Clarabel. As the mma rounded the buoy she hoisted the squaresail and gafi- topsail, and in running before the wind in- creased tiie lead twotold. The Carita, on rounding the buoy, followed the Himma’s ex- ample by putting on extra sail, and increased her lead oa the Clarabel. All sailed weil en the homestretch. The Amma being favored with light wind throughout the race, had a great advantage over her opponents. Gus Pentant and John Westerman were arrested to-day, charged with murdering Valentine Schact, an inmate of Soldiers’ Home, who was found shet and hid on a road near the city last May. They were ar- rested once before but discharged as no progg could be obtained against them. Since then detectives have been on the track and obtained testimony of the strong- est character.

Tanner rested on a cot for the greater part of the day. He took his usual morn- ing and evening rides, returning from the latter much exhausted. He was laid on his cot and in a few minutes was fast asleep. He awoke and asked for water, but before it could be given he had again fallen asleep. At 9.45 he retired, after drinking some water which his stomach was unable to re- tain. An examination showed his pulse to be 74, temperature 98 2-5, respiration 16. Since the commencement of his fast he has lost 27? peunds.
