Tue Gisravrar.— There is a possibility of another first-class cruiser coming to Halifax. It is reported at the Dockyard that H. M. S. Gibraltar will be atrached to the North American squadron next spring. Should the Gibraliar be commissioned she will make a most formidable addition to the North American squadron. The Gibraltar is a steel, copper sheathed#first- class cruiser,and was Jaunched in i892. Sle carries as her principal armament two protected by steel shields. Her speed is 197 knots, The two torpedo destroyers recently commissioned for this station will not likely leave England until the spring. H. M. Tartar is to be relieved this fall, and will go home to pay off.

Worwwoop Monxxsy Taearre— Prof. Wormwood and his wonderful trocp of trained monkeys will play at the Opera House, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct, 5th and 6th. There are thirty-oae of these mis- chievous beings. They turn somersaalte, ride bicycles, dance,do contortion acts, tight a prize fight with boxing gloves. They pave a supper scene in which the monkeys acts as waiters. Thev have running and trotting races, where dogs acts as horses and monkeys as drivers. This is the most wonderful troupe of trained animais in the world. Prof. Worm- weod has the only talking monkey in Americe, Bob» :s his name. in which Mrs. Bryan, the wife of a Dr. Bryan, of Northampton, has been killed under circumstances pointing to muder.

The Rev. Dr. Aubrey Prince, a well- known divine was killed by burglars at his residence on Monday, a little poy has been kidnapped and murdered in the suburbs, a rch miserly woman has been found cnt to pieces at her residence, B-thnal Green, and a farmer’s daughter, Emma Johnson, has been murdered at Windsor under peculiarly atrocious cir- cumstances. Her body was mutilated, stripped and thrown into the Thames.

The authors of all these outrages are still at large and there seems to he no traces of them, although the murderer of Emma Johnson is believed to be a maniac whose actual idenilty is not koown but who for months past has frightened and assaulted persons on the road from Windsor to Maiden Head and who has always managed to elude capture.

Joseph Chamberlain, says that the govern- ment of Canada will, in 18¢8, make large purchases of heavy field batteries and a number of defence guns, the latier being fora new scheme for the defence of Montreal and the river below that city. Special instructions to this effect, the Post adda, were issued immediately after the return to Canada of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the premier.
