The 1978-79 Student Union was distin- guished most of all, I feel, by the type of long-term financial planning which was implemented for the first time since our incor- poration. Our Treasurer has done his utmost to assure that future Student Lhicns will have a firm financial base upon which to operate. Previous Unions have lived from year to year, ignoring past financial commitments and

1 future financial planning. 'mis year, however, a firm, well-planned financial arrangement was drawn up that will guarantee future Unicns will have the capital they need.

Another unique feature of this Union was the emphasis placed on political issues, sudl as tuition, quality of education, etc. These issues received little attention in the past, which was understandable

' since they were not pressing or overly serious.

Well, it's that time of year again. 01 May 13th there will be over 300 seniors graduating from UPEI. This is a very important part of every student's university life, culminating their academic adiievements. Senior Week on the other hand, culmin— ates the university social life.

such issues can no lmger be ignored. As students, we must take an active part in protecting our university from unreasonable actions

of the government or community, Although we made a start this year, there is much, mudi more to be done, and future Unions will ‘ find they have little choice but to spend more effort and speak more qaenly on issues that affect us all.

Another project of this year's Union with which I am very pleased is the renovations made to the

(Barn over the summer.

Although the project did have some effect on other act'ivities‘because of the expense involved, I do not question the importance of the work that was done, particularly in the Panther Lounge. Stucbnts at UPEI are extremely fortunate

in having their own Student Union building. It is imperative that every administraticn do its ut- most to ensure that the Barn is maintained and used to its fullest potential.

Up the Student Union Year

'lhis year we did what we could with the resources we had. I believe that the Bam is now more important and more useful than ever before. It is a real asset to this Union, me that will be of unimagined value in the years ahead.

Perhaps the most satis- fying point of the whole year has been the support and participation from UPEI students. Being on. Stucbnt Union Executive can some- times be a difficult position, and often the frustration and work involved seems to greatly outweigh any of the good times that may happen along. But always there are the friends and associates that you can rely on in a tight situation and they help to keep everything going. Every- body who helps in any way through the year deserves congratulations and thanks.

Working this past year as Presichnt of the Student Union has been an experience that I would not have missed for anything. were some things that might have been done differently but nothing that I regret doing. I
