The shutdown was to commis- sion a Georgetown ° substation and to make transmission alter- ations at a plant substation in Charlottetown.

The day was mild, however, and the loss of power occasioned to particular hardship on most

people.

Researchers are getting up. to three times the normal yield by growing tomatoes in a sand- #awdust mixture instead of soi.

“We are hoping that within anothes year interested growers will be able to make use of this information,” says R. M. Adam- 60n, the scientist in charge of the research. Experiments have been going on for three years at the federal experimental farm at Saanichton, on Vancou- ver Island.

A mixture of three parts of pitrun sand to one part of hem- lock or . Douglas fir sawdust, with commercial fertilizers added, has produced yields of 35 pounds of fruit from each plant, instead of the usual five to seven pounds.
