British Farmers’ Delegates.
Ir the delegates of the Lritish farmers had visited us a month or two sooner, they would have been enabled to form a better idea of the agricultural capabilities of the Province than they can at this time. Still they will be enabled to judge of these cupa- bilities by the products thay will see in the markets and at the Provincial Exhibition. We are rather pleased than otherwise that they have declined to themselves wholly under the leadership of members of the Government or other interested per- sons, and have preferred to see the coun- try for themselves and make notes of what they thus see in their own way. In this Province, they will probably note that for

The Patriot's Inuendo.
Ir has been specifically charged that the recent dismissal of the School Inspectors and the Chief Superintendent of Educa- tion was the consequence of party methods and party malice. The Patriot does not attempt to rebut this charge. It cannot be refuted. So the Patriot merely compli- ments Mr. D. J. McLeod and makes the meanest kind of an attack upon Mr, Nicholson. It declares that Mr. Nicholson “is a young man whom we highly steem;” and then it intimates that Mr. Nicholson’s pres- pectsmight beinjured if the truth concerning him were told. Mr. Nicholson cannot greatly value the esteem of the friend who would injure his reputation by a statement that is at once so insinuating and so cow- ardly. If there be anything in disparage- ment of Mr. Nicholson’s high character as an official, let us know it by all means. Lat it be shown that the Government have good grounds for its violation of the non- political status of the Education Depart- ment—if such grounds exist. The Patriot’s inuendo cannot injure Mr. Nicho!son’s prospects here; for here we know the Patriot, and Mr. Nicholson, and the motives which actuate the Government; but it may injure him abroad, where neither is known. It is remarkable, that after nearly a week of cogitation, thé Patriot is able to excuse the
outrageous and inhuman conduct of the Government, in respect to Mr. Nicholson, only by an inuendo calculated to defeat his efforts to obtain a situation in some other part of the world.

THE announcement that the Government are about to prosecute in the courts those who, as contractors and officials, conspired to rob the public exchequer will be satis- factory to the country. It isto be hoped that the boodling rascals will receive cou- dign, punishment.

—When our esteemed correspondent Jo Mash died some years ago, we felt that it was unlikely that anyone could be found to fill his place. Mr. Pelto’s letter in another column indicates that if Jo's mantle has not fallen on Mr. Pelto’s shoulders he must possess a considerable portion of his ward- robe. If his desire to write were even less than his letter expresses, we think our readers may expect an occasional contribu- tion. We hope his expectation in regard to fire flying out of certain parties’ eyes may be realized. ;

Batoon Ascenston.—A large baloon, prob- ably from the naval exhibition, containing two men in the car, passed over the town ou Saturday evening at a considerable height and caused much excitement. The baloon wentin the direction of Portsmouth, and dropped numbers of leafelets. Amongst the papers (which looked like sand ballast thrown out of the car) dropped from the baloon were coupons from Messrs. Greenlees Brothers, en- titliog the finder to a bottle of Ciaymore Scotch Whiskoy. A man named Ford, of Fin- champstead, picked up one of the coupons, and Messrs. Baker & Co, the local agents, handed the finder a bottle of whiskey in ac. cordance with the statement upon the paper. —Extract from the Reading Observer,
