France. by word and deed. has virtually announced that parlia- mentary debate on eatabllahment of the European Defence Commu- nity. originally scheduled for this month. will not be held until af- ter the Geneva conference.

There was every possibility. tinder these circumstances. that if :he government had forced the debate. the reaulting vote would have been against EDC, which in ‘turn would have been a slap at the United states.

There use some possibility that Premier Lanlel would permit the debate to go ahead. since it was expected to extend beyond the opening of the Geneva conference. But Indo»Ch.ina is expected to come up at the conference after the Korean question, and the whole business may last for as much as three months.
