A Romance of the Stage.

A romantic chapter in the annals of

the amateur drama, has just been played in Ofen, Hungary. The beaatiful daughter of a manufacturer imagined that she could trace in herself the germs of a considerable dramatic genius, and urged her parents to allow her to adopt the stage as a_ profession. The prosaic elders refused their con sent, but permitted her to satisfy her aspirations as far as possible by taking leading parts in the numerous dilettante play-actiogs which are a favorite amusement of local society. She per- formed with great applause such parts as the Louis, in “Kabale in Liebe,” the Kitty in “Kathehen von Heilbronn,” and the like,and soon became in de- mand. It happened that in nearly all the dramas that she had to play the lovely heroine, a handsome young gene tleman of good family, who was also a little stage-struck, played the part of the lover. Theatrical love, on her side at least, developed into the actual, human passion, while on his side it never passed the boundary which severs representation from reality. Her pas- sion, which was returned so warmly upon the boards, was met coldly at the saloon and at the supper table; _per- haps it was not even suspected by its object. The young lady determined that life without him as a life-long partner, was not worth living, and she resolved toend itina manner worthy of her two-fold passion for the drama and the handsome amateur. She procured the adoption of a tragedy in which the heroine poisons herself for love and dies in the arms of the beloved. The mise- en-scene was admirable. The girl play- ed the poisoning scene with such an impassioned and lifelike reality that the spectators were enraptured, and perhaps concluded that her parents were to blame for witholding such re- markable gifis from a wider, public. Bat as the convulsive writhings pre- scribed by the part seemed to have gno end, and the heroine went on dying,but would not die, to the perplexity and consternation of the hero, the observers began to suspect that something was amiss. <A physician who was among the guests, sprang upon the stage and siezed the chalice of poison which the heroine had drained. It contained some weak solution of phosphorus,fortunatel y too weak to be fundamentally mischiev- ous, and the immediate application of an antidote set everything right. Three days after, it is reported, she declared herself healed ef both her passions—for the stage and the amateur. A Slice of Luck.

A traveler in the south of France was recently'going through a forest, when he suddenly met with a dozen, as he thought, suspicious characters. His first thought was of escape ; but to his great astonishment, one of them came forward, and, after some conversation about trees, summarily offered one bun- dred napoleons if he would retire. The traveler said he had no objection, and to his surprise the sum was given him, and he went on his way rejoicing. He notified the authorities, when he dis- covered that a large sale of forest trees took place that day, to which the local buyers had been bidden, and these men composed a “knock-out,” that is, had conspired to prevent any one else bid- ding,iu order that they might obtain the timber at acheap.rate, The travel- er was supposed by them to be a well. known timber merchant, and to have entered the forest for the purpose of bidding, so he was bought off,

Manitoba Man Mulcted.

Thomas Ridgney, an honest grocer of Winnipeg, Man., went to New York by special blizzard in response to saw- dust circulars to buy $5,000 in counter- feit Canadian money for $250.*He wan- ted ,to give it to the poor in Winnipeg. He put up at the Union Square Hotel on Wednesday. Johu Carroll, of No. 126 Spring street, met him, carried him off to No. 119 McDougal street and intro- duced him to Charles Folsome. Fol- some showed a pile of genuine Cana- dian money, promised to send $5,000 worth around to Ridgney’s hotel and got the $250 out of him. No money, of course, was sent to the hotel. Ridgney had Carroll arrested, but Fol- some cannot be found. To his great surprise the honest grocer was sent to the house of detention to insure his appearance against his honest friend.
