Charlottetown has had the honour of wel- coming delegates to many conventions and other gatherings in recent years, but this week's visitors attending the Confederation Bonspiel are in a class by themselves. Representing curling rinks from all parts of Eastern Canada and Newioundland, they also represent the busi- ness, industrial and professional life of Can- ada as few organizations can claim to do. Many of our visitors are distinguished leaders in their own walks of life, but it is as devotees of the "roarin' game" that they are here, and the en- ioyment thcy derive comes from informal con- tact with othcr enthusiasts of the sport. Their presence in such numbers is a great occasion for Charlottetown, and their evident pleasure in being with us is a mattcr of satisfaction to all our citizens.

llow ls Britain Taking It?

The cable news from the Old Land does not make pleasant reading these days, and there are nol lacking Jeremiahs here who predict that "Britain is through," and the future is with the United States and its untold wealth which will enable it to corner world markets. But we need not be too sure of that. Money can go a long way in attaining ends and accomplishing things, but it cannot take the place of character, and thanks be, the British still rank character high as a valuable asset. Just to give an inkling into the other side of the economic situation in Lon- don we append herewith a programme of the ordinary meetings of the Royal Society of Arts for the present session:

verbal criticism has been voiced of my several letters regarding the Hudson Bay Route as amcans o! importing western feed grains to this Province, on the ground that the shipping rates will be too expensive and w1l1 disappoint our people. This criticism would uppcar to emanate from the grain shipping interests at Montreal, svha 1n this selfish world natur- ally do not wish to see their ln- vestcd interests interfered with. That 1s a matter, however, that will shortly come before the House of Commons as some o.‘ the Prairie Members intend to tlSk for a Royal Commission to investigate and report upon the merits of the Hudson Bay Route. As already stated I lmve been in correspondence with a number o.’ men holding responsible posit- ions in the West and have had practically all the facts regarding transportation costs verified from rliftcront sources. Amongst others Mr. R. H. Mac- Nvlll has iziiren m: a great deal of infornlzlion. Mr. MacNeill was barn in Charlottetown and is a graduate of Prince of Wales Col- lr-gc. l-Ie has been employed by t-hc Hudson Bay Railway and has travelled on ships beta-con Churchill and St. John's. Now- foundland. He 1s an executive director of the Hudson Bay Route Association and apparently k rows thr- whole grain story at Chur- chill front A fo Z. I shall quote n few sentences from 111s letters which bear on the rates:

"The rail distance from Re- gina to Port Churchill ls 04o ntilcs and-from Regina to Port Arl-lllll‘ is 800 miles Vla the Canadian National Railway. To continue to Montreal 1s an ad- ditional 913 miles."

This latter evidently is the dls- tance by rail for I am told by a Montreal authority that the dis- tance by boat is 1.215 Italics. From Regina to Port Churchill the rate 1s .211: per 100 lbs. or about 10c per bushel for an aver- age of wheat, barley and oats. The rail rate from Regina to Port Arthur ls 20c per 100 lbs. If the grain is grown in the north- ern district. the rate is lower to Churchill and higher to Port. Ar- thur so It is evidently on the av- erage about the same to the two ports. The real difference. there- fore, lies in the ocean shipping. Let me quote again:

“The ocean freight rgte plus insurance from. Churdtill to Liverpool 1s 4111c per bushel. Three-quarters of this rate is the frelg-ht rate and one quar- lz-'r insurancc."

I have been unable to obtain ocean freight. rates from Church- ill to Charlottetown but as the distance 1s much less tharrfrom Churchill to Liverpool we are quite safe 1n taking the 4‘~'.-c rate to this port, particularly as it ls based on high marine insurance exacted 1n London, and up to the present tlme the American mar- ine insurance companies have not entered into competition with Lloyds.

"more is. however. another ma- jor point 1n favour of the I-lpdson Bay route, namely that Ehlps leaving Churchill can load with 300.000 bushels of wheat or say 450000 bushels of outs, 375.000 bushels of barlrgv, whereas, owing to lllc St. Lowrance canals bclng only 14 feet 1n depth. boats loav- ing Port Arthur can only load at most two thirds of their hold and are compelled, 1n order to keep tho grain from tlllfling, to ‘board’ the top surfacc which is quite an cxpenslvr‘ operation and has to be added la the freight clmrgvs. and of course the 1 ger the load thr- lowcr the carry ng cost per bushel.

These boats I understand 45o feat long.
