Four Dead, 11 Injured In Peterborough, Ont. Business Block Fire

PETERBORDUGH. Ont.. May 20-(OP)-Firemen and volunteers early today recovered the lost of the four bodies buried under tons or wreckage Saturday durinl I 900,000 blaze that injured ll oth- or persons, destroyed a four-stor- iv downtown business block and damaged an adjoining building.

Finding of the body of Earl spenceley. a florist who volunteer- ed to fight the fire. ended the search of firemen and hundreds of volunteers who worked under searchlights to locate the four vic- film. They were trapped by an avalanche of smouldering rubble when floors and ceilings caved in.

The others who lost their lives in the blaze which started around 5:30 a. in. EDT Saturday where rlty firemen Grover Deck. Orville Rome and George Reynolds. The R. C. A. F. announced last night that at least one man died when a Dakota plane from sum- msrside station crashed in the Labrador wilderness last Monday.

The announcement followed an intensive air search. leading to the discovery of the plane's wreckage 130 miles southwest of Goose Day Saturday.

A land party fording streams and hacking through underbrush- made its way to the crash scene and found the body of Flying Of- ficer Owen Foster, 23, of North Vancouver. He was the co-pilot.

Air Force officials declined to speculate on the fate of the other three crew members of the Dakota.

Bad weather yesterday hamper- ed cfforts to conduct a complete investigation. Two Comes from Greenwood, N. 5.. air station land- ed on a nearby lake shortly after the wreckage was sighted. Ground parties then proceeded to the scene. Later a report was given out that the wreckage was strewn over a large area and that there was no sign of 'life. one wing was about half a. mile away from the main part of the plane and a yel- low object which might have been a dinghy was seen still further off.

Finding the plane cleared up one point. It was on course when it went down so there was no error of navigation involved. The wreck- age was spotted by a crew of I. plane from Greenwood based temporarily at Goose Bay for the search which was piloted by F0 5. H. MacPadden of Montreal.

That morning a number of aircraft went out from Summerside on a regular navigation flight but fly- ing in a fan-like formation to cov- er as much territory as possible. The course of two of them took them in the general vicinity of the crash. Shortly after that the two Cansos landed and ground parties went in.

Yesterday they were due to re- turn and a U. s. helicopter was to hover overhead and do some low level looking around. However weather prevented the putting in- to effect of these plans.-S

OTTAWA. May 20 -(C P) .. Parliament is hoping to take an extended Dominion Day holiday- one that will last all summer and perhaps longer.

July 1. Canada's birthday. has been set officially as the target for either prorogation or adjourn- ment of the current session, de- pending on whether the Govern- mcnt decides to close up shop for the year or hold another sitting in the early fall.

The session now is nearly four months old and Parliament ai- feady has disposed of most of the major pieces of legislation. Short- ly. Prime Minister St. Laurent is other bills the Government intends to introduce.

Canada Adopting 45-Ton. Patton Tank For Army

OTTAWA, May 20 -(CF) - Canada is adopting the 45-ton Patton tank for her expanding SFm)'.

The Defence Department will be buying a. considerable number of them from the United States fairly soon at a cost of morethan

fun to many millions of dollars.

This is one of the major devel- opments of the program of abandoning British-type arms and rearming primarily with American equipment and weapons.

This is one case. however. where one piece of U. 5. equipment will replace another because Canad- ians fought in the last war with the U. S. Sherman and the Sher- man has been Canada's post-war tank as well.

The Patton. named for the flamboyant Gen. George Patton. is a bigger. tougher. harder-and- longer hitting customer than the Sherman. It represents an im- proved version of the Pershing.

It has been decided not to adopt the giant British Centurion tank that has made it big name for it.- self in Korea. The Patton has done well there. too. v

some tank men would like Can- ada to get the Centurion but sup- ply problems rule this out. Can- ada is integrating her supply problems with those of the U. S because the two countries might some day have to fight together in defence of this continent and be- cause their production standards are more similar than those of Canada and Britain.

When the 27th Brigade goes to Europe. it is cxpectcd in take Patrons. The 25th Brlgade's ann- orcd squadron may use them in Korea too.

The Patton has a 90 mm. gun compared to the Sherman's 72 mm. It weighs 45 tons compared to the Sherman's 32.

Russia Anxious To End Korean War

UNITED NATIONS. NY.. May 30 - (CP) - Informed Western sources said today Russia has in- dicated privately in Western dip- lomatic circles that she is anxious now to end the Korean war.
