Four dozen out of nine should realize 30 cents per dozen, three dozen should bring about 20 cents per dozen, and two dozen should realize 15 cents per dozen, or an average of about 23 cents. Of course, this calcul ation may be wrong, but it will convey an idea of what may be expected.

The Cost and Waste.
The cost and waste of the drinking habit is well illustrated in the following statistics: A glass of beer costs 5 cents. There are 640 glasses in a barrel, so that the retailer receives $32 for every barrel of beer he draws. The protit is
something like 400 per cent. At least 15,000,000 barrels of beer were consuw- ed in this country last year, for which
the drinkers paid the aggregate of $48,- 090,000. Whiskey and other strong drinks average 7 cents a glass, or $4.48 agallon at retail. About 78,000,000 gallons were imbibed in this country last year, the drinkers paying therefor
nearly $350,000,000. Here is over $5825,000,000 spent yearly for drioks that do no good to the consumers, but
on the contrary are a positive injury to many of them. Suppose this sum spent for articles of use and comfort, and it would buy a good suit of clothes for every man ia the land, give every woman a decent dress and bonnet, and clothe and shoe every child. Such an expenditure of the vast sum would necessarily revive business and tend to keep it good. The waste of the drinking habit has a close connection with basi- ness depression, for when curtailment comes in expenses, useless drinks are not the things given up.

He Never Took Medicino.
“Tell the people not to take medicine and not to be afraid of cold air or cold water.” These were among the last words spoken by Thomas Penrose,aged ninety-four years, who died near Blan- don, Pa,, ou Saturday, after a few days iliness. The old man had, throughout his entire life, carried out a vow never to take medicine, and he maintained his resolve totheend. Up te within a few days ago he was quite strong for his years. Peorose was an eccentric bachelor. He lived all his life on the farm where he was born, and which he bas owned for a half-century. He never left home, but was exceedingly well read-and had m: ny Visitors. One of his rules of life was to keep the win- dows of his chamber wide open both in summer and winter all the yea: round. Frequently his bed was cover- ed with snow in the morning. He per- formed his toilet at the pamp, to which he walked barefooted summer and winter. With the mercury below zero he would stand at a pump, bathing his head, arms and feet never taking cold. He never wdre an overcoat, but dressed very nearly alike all the year round,and
never drank anything but cold water. _- Example—Look to It. Let every parent look well to his
