urday a black bear hunt he is or- ganizing to provide bearskins for Bucmingham Palace Zuardsmen will not amount to a slaughter of the animals.

The mayor, -here on a business trip. said plans for the hunt have been approved by the humane society and the department of lands and forests. “It will be strictly a sporting event.”

Mayor Del Villano offered to supply bearskins for the guards regimem after reading a news item last month which reported the guardsmen were short of skins to refurnish their worn busbys—the tall black hats which distinguish their dress uniforms A later London report . said 6,000 bearskins would be needed. This touched off a flood of letters to the Timmins mayor protesting such a “wanton slaughter.”

London Friday said the idea of the British Anmy accepi'ng a gift involving slaughter that would net otherwise take place is “not pretty.” the Times also wondered ‘if the mass hunt was really necessary.

“We never at ary time said we were going to kill 6,000 bears and the guards havef’t asked us to,” the mayor explained. “They teld us they have 3,000 hats and about 300 need replacement each year.”

No goal has been set for the hunt which will take place when the snow leaves the Northern On- tario bush and the bears emerge from hibernation — probably in the early part of May.

The skins are at their prime in May and this usually lasts for two or three weeks. Only prime skins are suitable and it takes a whole bearskin for each hat.
