He had been on the most affectionate terms with Father Mathew up to the time of that gentleman’s death, accompanying him in most of his wanderings on his temperance mission.

In a recent letter to his parents he gives a brief sketch of what was going on among military men in Constantinople, where he had arrived on the 18th Dec. He was then boand to Smyrna, thence to Malta, and from Malta to Liverpool. Capt. Matheson

From the report of the City Council pro- eeedings in your issue of yesterday, | take the following extract :-—

‘** Councillor Harris took the opportunity of correcting a statement that was made at the meeting on Monday night. He said whilst at the meeting he was terribly startled by a gentleman stating that our police force costs the city a yearly sum of $11,000. This was entirely incorrect, and he wished to state for the public benefit that at present the whole cost of the Police Department, Magistrate, Clerk and all, was $8,000,”

In the course of my remarks at the meeting referred to, | stated the Police (meaning, of course, the Department) would cost thi: year some $11,000, my object in referring to this item been to show that if the City could afford to spend thatsum for the Police, it could surely spend for educational purposes the sum of $9,115. I repeat that statement.

in the books of the City under the head of ‘Expenditure for the year ending 31st Decem- ber last the item ‘ Police’ is footed up $8039.” The charge for additional police in this amount is bat for two months.

if the Police Department last year, with a force of twelve men for ten months and 19 men for two months, cost $8,039, what would the Department cost this year with a force ol nineteen men, each receiving $1.00 per day and clothing ?

When Councillor Harris works out this sum he will probably be again “ terribly startled ;” aud, perhaps, at. the next meeting he will ‘state for tne public benefit” the result.

Breakinc Carzo.—In Novemer last the schr. ‘‘ Albertine,” Captain bunker, left Montague, P. E. {., with a cargo of Island produce for Halifax. After a passage of some thirty-two days, the schooner reached this port, When it was found that the car- vo was considerably short of what it should be according to the manifest. Acting for the Merchants’ Marine Insurance Company, Capt. Anderson with Detective Hutt, set about looking up the missing stuff. ‘They found that the schooner had put into Marie Joseph, Guysboro County, and thither they went. Thero they ascertained that the

cargo, at a large discount for cash. The principal purchasers appears to be Elijah Hawbolt, Esq., J. P., and the Postmaster at Marie Joseph. This ¢eutleman gave up a portion of his purchase, but was himself arrested, examined before Squire Hemlow, and commitied for tral in the Supreme Court at Guysboro. Mr. 8S. Hawbolt, who appears to have bought some of the cargo in good faith, and paid full price for it, was also arrested and committed for trial. He gave up ali he bought. The captain of the | schr. is now missing, and though he has been dilligently sought for, he cannot be found, —H2. Herald.
