We were shown in the market to-day some very large stocks and leaves of rhu- burb, which were grown by Mr. James Lewis, of St. Clair. The stock of one which we measured was two feet long, end the leaf wes 2 feet 6 inches long by 2 feet wide. This rhuburb is superior to any which we have seen imported this season.
Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, George Swan, for stealing thirty dollars from his mother, was com- mitted for trial at the Jume term of the Supreme Court; Samuel McDougall and William Murray, two juveniles, summoned on complaint of Miss Ada McKinnon, for assault, did not appear, and a warrant was issued fi ir their arrest.
Tere was a large attendance at the market to-day. The prices were as follows : Beef, small, from 8 to 15 cents ; do., by the quarter, from 7 to 10 cents ; mutton, per Ib., from 7 to 12 cents ; lamb, per quar- ter, from 50 cents to $1.00; butter, fresh, per Ib., from 16 to 21 cents ; eggs, per doz. , from 8 to 10 cents ; barley, per bush., from 60 to 75 cents ; oats, per bush., from 43 to 45 cents; hay, per 100 lbs., 60 to 65 cents.
Drownine Accipent.—-A St. Andrew’s, N. B., despatch to the St. John Globe states that Captain Brad Rideout, of Calais, and Horace Pettigrove, of Bayside, were drowned at the wharf in Calais, on Tuesday after- noon, by the upsetting of their boat, which was caused by Captain Rideot stepping quickly into it from the wharf. | The bodies were found soon after. Benjamin Petti- grove, father of Horace, and two other men narrowly escaped drowning. They were in the boat when it capsized.
Tue steamer ‘ Albert” is performing regular fortnightly trips between Pictou, Magdalen Islands, Georgetown and Souris. Surely, King’s County, Prince Edward Island, must ever feel indebted to the Do minion Government, and especially to the Hon. D. Davies, chairman of the Steam Navigation Company for the generous at- tention given to this constituency. If this isa specimen of the Trade policy of the General Government, it should be en- couraged and perpetuated—just as short a time as possible. Protection may not be acceptable, but we can confidently assure the powers that be, that this Free-of-Trade policy is far more unsatisfactory than they have ever dreamed of. Yet, we expect soon to hear that Mr. Davies is a popular !

Ow Wednesday evening last a man named George Swan was arrested by Ofticer Mc- Gregor, for stealing a purse containing $30 from his mother. He appeared before the Magistrate this morning for examination. The evidence taken shows thai at noon on Wednesday he entered his. mother’s dwel- ling house and stole the purse from her bed room. She missed the purse shortly after it was taken, immediately suspected the prisoner of taking it, and left orders at the Police Station for his arrest. He was about ‘‘striking out” to have a jolly time. When arrested by the officers in a bar room he was tendering a ten dollar bill for a treat. They immeciately searched him and found on his person twenty dollars. The bar- tender returned to the police the change of the ten dollar bill which was tendered for the drink, and thus Mr. 8. only succeeded in squandering twenty cents of the stolen money. He was committed for trial at the June sitting of the Supreme Court for lar- ceny.
Ix the upper apartment of the Market House this forenoon, a market woman caused a general commotion. It was soon after she entered the apartment and laid her saleables on the table that she thrust her hand into her pocket, and found that her purse, containing a large suia of money was gone. Her disappointment could not be expressed. She became excited, and as she searched every pocket in her market costume, she cast sharp and suspicious
lances at all near by her. Ii was gone, No doubt her pockets were picked. Ina terrible flutter of excitement, she told the police what had happened; got two to search the Market House, and asked the Marshal if she could have more——** at least a half a dozen.”. The two officers made a lively search. While they were thus en- gaged, a bright thought aroused the droop- ing spirits of the poor woman: to search her market basket. So doing, she found it ina corner where she concealed it before leaving her home. As she plucked it from her
basket, six police entered the department {n order to more closely prosecute the search,
