Dear Sir,— I send an extract from the report of Dominion Cattle Breeders Association 1899. You will notice they take a stand in direct Opposition to Minister Fisher, who is only an amateur farmer and stockman, more conceited than practical. Note the statement of Dr. Patten, who isan M, D, of as good repute in his locality, St. George, Ontario, as any medical man in his parish in Prince Edward Island. Georgetown Jan, 318t, 1900. Richard Gibson :Cattle breeding has been, and is one of the industries in which Canadians have excelled ; and one of the main sources of wealth to our farmers, No country in this world has sucha good name as a cattle breed- ing country, always excepting the nother land, the fountain head tor the improved breeds of live stock. We have not now one-tenth part of the first class animals needed to supply the demand in our great Norihwest and the United Statess If we do no: make every effort to hol! cur po iuon we will be beaten by some ot ihe Central States which are now importing for themselves, and which a few years ago, bought from Canadian importers and bie ders. Our shipping cattle are not wv» goodas they were twenty yeirs ago No ten agencies combined have hid so much effect in bringing about this deterioration as_ the application of the tuberculin test. Wemay well profit from the experience of the medical profession in this matter. They have quit using tuberculin inthe human family, having decided long ago that ft hurried the end in many cases and made the subject an easy prey to con- sumption, whereas under favorable cir- cumstances the disease would have lain dormant or died out. The most eminent specialists agree that in very few cases can tuberculin be used with- out danger. Ifthis is true in human beings it must also be true with regard to cattle. Herds tested have given proof of this by animals with rugged constitutions suddenly taking ill and dying. Other herds have been tested the third time before any reaction took place, when a majority showed great reaction. We believe that the injec- tion of tuberculin is more likely to create disease than to stamp it out. We believe the test is misleading, inas- much as it condemns cattle practically sound and clears others very much diseased, We know that it hampers our trade in this country, and that it must stop us from importing from England and Scotland, which would bean incalculable injury to the | great industry we represent. Mr. Gibson intended at first to allow this to stand as part of his resolution, when quite a heated discussion took | place.

it should be very carefully considered. | There are many statements made here | which have abundant reom for criti-

cism. I think it very risky indeed to| vote for that motion.

Mr. Gipeson : I am very sorry, Mr. Hobson, that the medical profession has not ,adopted the tuberculin ; and as regards cattle in your own town, Hon. John Dryden told me where cattle “responded, some had found small tubercules in the glands of the neck visible with the naked eye, and in one cow that was rotten there was no response, Mr. Hopson: I think it would be a very serious thing if we go on and endorse all the statements in that resolution. I have made a_ special study of this, and I tested one of the largest herds in Canada myself, and I know the facts are not in accordance with that resolution.
