Acconrvrna to the report of the Deputy Minister of Marine the total amount expended on the various branches of | this Department, including the salaries of the estalishment staff, duriug the fiscal year ended 30th Juve last, was $1,088,.892.96 while the total amount voted was $1,041,232.50, which last named amount includes the departmenta! salaries. The whole number of persons engaged in the outside service of the Department at the close of the calendar year was i414.

The lighthouse service of the Domia- ion is divided as follows, viz :—The Ontario Division, embracing lights above Montreal; the Quebec Division, extend- ing below Montreal, and including the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence; the Nova Scotia Division, the New Bruns- wick Division; the Prince Edward Island Division, and -the British Colum- bia Divisions. The total number of light sttions in the Dominion, on the Bist December last was 526, and of lights shown 617; the number of steam fog-whistles and automatic tog-horos 30, and the number of light keepers, en- gineers of fog-whistles and other assist- ants, with crews of light-ships, was 673 In the Prioee Edward (tsiand Light-} house Division, under Mr. Artemasa Lord, there are 45 lights uoder the care of 35 light-keepers.

Two fog horns, operate! by compressed air, have veeu placed at this station, supplied by Messrs Carrier, Laiuve & Co., of Levis, at a cost of $960 each. At Sandy Island, Alber- ton, the front range light on the island has been discontinued, and two lights established at the head of Cascumpec Harbor, to guide up the harbor. The front light consists of a small dioptric lantern, showing a fixed red light, elevated 22 feet above high water aud visible 9 miles, The back range is situated half a mile westof the front light, aad consists of au open framed tower 22 feet high, threugh the roof of which a smati dioptric lantern is hoisted on a mas!, The light is fixed red, elevated 40 feet above high water, and

‘The number of new vessels built and regisiered in Canada duriug the last year was 240, measuring 43,179 tons registered tonnage. Estimtatiog the value of the new tonnage at $45 per ton, it gives a total value of $1,943,055 for new vessels.

The expenditures of the past year in connection with the Northern Light, amounted to $35,963.54; ber earnings amounted to $2,175.91.

Tue report of the Department of the Ioterior supplies the following compari- son of homestead aud pre-emption entries iu our great Northwest :—

The total amount received by the De- pirtment for pre-emptions and cas sales to individuals aud colonization companies, for the past four years are as follows :— 1882, $1,727,280; 1883, $925,962; 1884, $788,136; 1885, $288,594; the great falling off last year being due to the Riel Rebellion.

The great benefit accuring to the Northwest by the opening of the coal mines is shown by quotetions of the prices of coal at Wiuvipeg, compared with wlat they were previously. It is said tha: hard coal can now be pur- chased iu Winnipeg for $9 per ton, and s0\'t coal for $7.

The cattle industry is growing rapidly. There are now 40,000 bead of cattle and 10,000 head of sheep on the ranches lying along the base of the Rocky Mountains.

It is shown by statistics for the years from 1874 that to date there have been surveyed ia the Norihwest 68,655,452 acres, equal to 418,847 farms of 160 acres each.

Light and Shauley—are giviog in their approval of the scheme by which itis proposed to convect this Province with the mainland. In a paper read last February, before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Mr. Richard P. Rothwell, C. — The Critic of Halifax remarks that “the gross public debt of Canada, at the close of the last fiscal year, amounted to $264,000,000; the available assets to #68 000,000, leaving a net debt of $195,- 006.000, which in roand numbers is about $40 per head to the population. As compared with the average debt per head in the principal foreign countries, the amount is comparatively smal!, but the interest is quite large enough to be a serious tax upon our revenue. New York, March 14.

The steamer Oregon was run into bya deep-laden, three-masted schooner this morning, east of Fire Island, Part of the passengers were transferred to a pilot boat and part to the schooner, and all were sub- sequently transferred to the German steamer Fulda. There were 896 souls in all. The Oregon was entirely abandoned, and aunk at 1 p. m. to-day. The steam- ship Oregon was a Cunarder, launched in 1883, and the most magnificent, powerfui and fastest of the transatlantic vessels, with the exception of the Etruria, of the same line.

An Outrageous Assault.

About midnight, Col, J. K. Phillips, commender of the First Regiment of State Militia, was assaulted near his residence in East Portland by two men. He was robbed, and as he lay on the ground he was shot, The wound will probably be a fatal one. Col. Phillips has been out- spoken concerning the ontrages against Chinese, and leaders of mobs have threat- ened his life.

The Dempsey-L>B!anche prize fight came off early this morning at Larchmont, Dempsey won in the 13ch round; time, 6 minutes, LeBlauche failing to respond to the call. It was plucky and fair fighting.

The series of five billiard games between Vigniwux aud Schaefer, 690 points each for

$1,000 a side, terminated last night. Schaefer, 3,000; Vignaux, 1,855.

Daring 2nd Bloody Rebbery.

PortLanp, Oregon, March 14.

Intelligence has been received at Joliet, lil., of a daring aud bloody robbery, per- petrated on an express train on the Chi- cago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, on Friday night. The robbers, afier what appears to have been a terrific struggle, murdered the express messenger and rifled the safe of valuables worth from $25,000 to $100,000.

Lord Rosebery, British Foreign Secre- tary, has instructed Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, British Commissioner in Egypt, to arrange for the reduction of the army of oceupation by six regiments, aud the with- drawal of British troops from Assouan, and Egyptian troops from Wady Halfa.
