INspection.—The city truckmen met on Market Square this forenoon, in order that their teams might be inspected by the committee of councillors appointed for the purpose. There was a very good turnout, and the animals shown passed muster.

Mustcat Convention.— Mr. Ferguson, of Charlottetown, has organized at Souris a musical convention, consisting of about fifty members. Although only in operation for a short tima, it has awakened yuite a musical interest. He intends holding a concert at the close of the term.

Rove Work at Tae Barracks.—On Monday night quite a rough time was ex- perienced at the Souris Salvation Army barracks. A few cutsiders being determined to make things lively, succeeded in break- ing up the meeting. Apparently the devil is not yet conquered in the Eastern Me- tr polis.

PRowiBITION IN Kansas.—An exchange says: ‘‘ At Topeka, Kan., two sportsmen who had been drinking whiskey, had some words, and one filled the other full of shot, killing him instantly. The witnesses of the tragedy were a lot of boys who were playing ball and slaking their thirst with beer from a keg. So much for prohibition in Kansas.”

PatnvuL. AccipENT.—On Friday last, Albert Brehaut met with a painful accident while at work in Welsh’s steam saw mill, Fortune Road. In tending the circular saw, his hand came into contact with it, resulting in three of nis fingers being cut off and his hand be- ing almost sawn in two. Medical aid was secured, and after the wound was dressed he was removed to his home in Dundas.

DOMINION PARLIAMENT:

Debates and Proceedings,

Orrawa, April 30.

The House met at 1.30 o'clock, and after brief routine plunged into an exciting de- bate over Sir John’s motion to receive the report of the committee of the whole on the resolution providing for the construction of a railway between a point of junction on the New Brunswick railway at or near Harvey, N. B., and a point of junction with the Intereolonial railway at or near Salisbury, N. B., or somewhere between Salisbury and Moncton. The party lines were strictly drawn, and local interests | were delegated to back seats.

Mr. Weldon (St. John) moved the follow- ing amendment seconded by Mr. Ellis, **that the report be not concurred in, but that it be resolved that no action be taken by this House authorizing the construction by the Government of Canada of another line of railway between Harvey and Salisbury or Moncton until the proper surveys of the proposed line and reliable estimates of its probable cost are laid before Parliament, and until time has established that the ex- isting lines of railway between the points named is not sufficient to meet the de- mands of the passenger and freight traflic.

Mr. Ellis briefly supported ‘he amend- ment,

The debate which followed two and a half hours, and on division Weldon’s amendment was rejected, 34 to 70.

The resolution was then adopted and the Short Line bill was rashed through: its final stage.

The House, after some debate, accepted tle Senate’s amendment to the Anti-Com- bines Bill.

The Senate’s Act relating to bills of lad- ing was agreed to without amendment.

The House will meet again at 10.30 o'clock this (Wednesday) morning.

NOTES.

The House will prorogue Thursday after- noon if the Short Line Bill goes through the Senate in time. The measure will meet with much opposition in that Chamber.

It now turns out that Miss Mulcahey, who, two months ago, it was reported had been married to a dying lover named Hus- son, was victimized. The joke was perpe- trated by medical students. ‘The mock marriage took place in covered sleighs, with wigged medicos as parson and ** father from England,” but the most ghastly part of the performance was that a corpse was stolen from the dissecting room, covered from head to foot, and passed off as the girl’s lover.

The New Minister.

Montreal, April 30.

A private despatch from Ottawa says that it is certain that Hon. J. J. C. Abbot will become Minister of Railways and Can- als, that he will contest his old constitu- ency, Argentuil, the present member, Wilson, to be elected to the Senate.

Fostering the Spirit.

Lonpon, April 30. In the House of Commons this evening a motion of Samuel Smith, (Liberal) censur- ing the Government for fostering a spirit of drinking in India was carried, 113 to 103.
