Rome, July 10 —King Leopold of Bel- gium, mindful of the approach of the day for the assembling of Luzerne, Switzer- land, in August, of the Catholic congress for the suppression of slavery in Africa, has proposed as the best means to conquer slavery the building of railroads throughout the new Congo.

San Francisco, July 10.—Louise Caplin, once registrar of the city, committed suicide yesterday because of the discovery of a shortage of $2,000 in his accounts as police court clerk.

Winnipec, July 10.—There will be a pretty full yield of wheat in Manitoba and _the territories this season, but other crops 'will be light. The harvest on the whole will largely excecd what was anticipated two weeks ago, when lack of rain threaten- ed to minimize the yield to a considerable extent in Manitoba,

Boston, July 10.—Just as the pastor and deacons of the Baptist Church in Sudbury /were ready to hand around communion wine and bread, on Sunday, the Church was struck by lightning and badly damag- ed. This is the second or third time that the church has suffered in that way. The bolt which struck Sunday hit the same spot that was struck 14 years ago. No one was injured.

Toronto, July 10.—Crop reports from all sections of Ontario indicate thxt the prospects haye greatly brightened since the last raperts, and should the present warm weather continue the yield of wheat wiil be \20 large in favored sections asto bring the

general yield above the average, notwith- standing the losses in low lying grounds. The barley and oats yield will be very large. Corn is backward and will be a poor crop. Potatoes in some sections are a total failure. The roct crops are very un- ‘even, depending largely on the nature of the soil, Fruit will not be up to the average. °

Hauirax, July 10 —Another victim of the Chezzetcook fire, by which the store and dwelling of John G. Byrd were de- stroyed, has died from the injuries she re- ceived. The little boy, previously burned, as particulars show, fell through a hole , burned in the floor and caught on a beam. ‘To this he clung piteously, calling ‘*Mam- ma” until his hands were burned off, when, with a terrible shriek, he fell into the mass of tire below. His mother fainted, and his agonized father looked on unable to render his boy any assistance.

A Justification Needed.

Sir,— Allow me, through your columns, to enquire of the City Council and Chief of the Fire Department in reference to the following :—

{In1°"} the City Council and Chief of Fire Department sent an order to Messrs. Merrywe*' her, of London, for boiler tubes for the Merryweather Steam Fire Engine. Messrs. Merryweather refused to fill the order, and referred the matter to Messrs. T. &S., of Liverpool, with whom they had previously done business for this city. They declined at first to beeome responsible for the amount; but, after some corres- pondence with Messrs. M., assumed it, aud the tubing was forwarded and received by the city. When the city remitted draft to Messrs. T. & S., they for some reason witheld twenty-two shillings and seven- pence, and although Messrs. T. & 8. have several tiffes requested payment, it has not been made. Asa resident, this matter was recently brought to my notice by Messrs. T. & S., who also showed me the correspondence between themselves and Messrs. Merryweather, and who very justly spoke in anything but a kindly manner of the way they had been treated after obliging our city as they had done, and for which they had not received nor charged any remuneration. I wish to know how the City Council justifies itself in this matter.

Sir,—There appeared a letter in THe Examiner of the 10th inst., over the sig- nature of “‘ Sanitas,” advocating the closing of all the pumps in the city, on the ground that the water was unfit for use. Sir, it is a well known fact that all the pumps have not got bad water. Heartz’ pump and Quirk’s pump and a few others have good water, and cannot be closed. If you try to close Heartz’s pump it would lead to some- thing serious. Notice all the horses and cows that water there daily, besides the continual run for house use. Ask the people who reside in that part of the city if they will consent to have it closed, and you will find them indignant. They are | * quite satisfied with the quality of the water, so much so that there are but few men in that place who have taken water from the waterworks; and I believe that is the cause of all the trouble. To try to force the people to take the water from the city waterworks before they have made any pro- vision fora supply forthe poor! Are the / poor to be trodden down and left without water? Whocould have thought that any tyrant or body of tyrants would atrempt to show themselves so soon /—before they had completed their great {reservoir or made it tight. Beside this, there is a num- ber of poor that cannot take water, cannot pay fer it, and a number of houses which are not fit to put the water into. What are ; you going todo with them? Starve them jout? Those that have got the water in their houses dare not give one pail of water to a neighbor under the penalty of twenty dollars tine. My advice to those people
