Toronto, Sept. 25,—Word has been re- ceived here that Capt. T. O. Bridgewater, one of the famous Balaclava six hundred, died recently at Clanricarde, Peterboro county, Ont. He died in poor circum. stances, and a subscription had to be taken up to defray the expenses of the funeral.

Batuuast, Sept. 26.—The effects of the late fire will not be so damaging as was at first imagined by many. The St. Lawrence Lumber Co, say that they have sufficient sawn lumber on hand to fill all contracts and to load all ships chartered, and will still have a considerable quantity left over. They will probably rebuild during the win- ter.

Quezec, Sept. 27.—Ernest Pacaud ar- rived home yesterday by the Parisian, and although none of the ministers met him at the wharf as in former days this was only a blind, as the notorious boodler has been closeted almost ever since his arrival with Mercier and Langelier, his besom friends. To a newspaper reporter Mr, Pacaud said : ‘Don’t ask me for an interview on political matters, for you must tnderstand that it is impossible for me to speak until I have thoroughly placed myself au fait in regard to the situation. You can say, however, that Lam in excellent health and spirits and much improved since I left Quebec. I had a fine time across the water. We were in Paris from the 24th of August till the 3rd of September. We went from there to London where we stayed until the 16th, and then left for Liverpool to take the boat home. Iam quite prepared to meet any- thing that may turn up.”

“No, sir; I feel that I have done nothing to warrant such a move.”
