Beet Sugar in Maine.

‘*By « great deal of effert the Maine Sugar Beet Company got the farmers of _Maine, on whom it chietly depends, to promise to pro- vide some 12,000 tons of beets, at a cost, ex- f freight, of about $60,000, which sum is being paid out; the beets are nearly all de- livered and some of them are manufactured. The beevs were grown on about 1,300 acres, x only nme and a half tons an acre. s viel 1 of saccharine matter, ‘in the shape of suvar ani molasses, is about 12 per cent., which makes about 1,500 tons on the stock of this year. The Company.farnish the best seed. in order to make sure of its purity and soundness, and, as the manager told the writer, are well satislied with the sugar-bear- ing properties of beets grown in this country, and would expect a good yield from beets grown in the Maritime Province, if only the seek wer? prope rly selected. ‘¢On the other hand, the farmers who grow the beets; and who fizd them valuable for feeding cattle, do not thirk the price received very remunerative and they gramble because they have to sell by the long ton of 2,240 pounds; which is not the ton by which sugar is sold. Iiut then there are impurities con- nected with the beets as they are taken from the soil, and the Company's agents say that when the beets are cleansed, the weight will be found to be reduced to 2,000 pounds at least. It is likely, however, that the farmers of Maine, ectc., will not decrease the quantities of beets grown next year, ard that the Com- pany will contract at about the same prices, trusting tat time will give them an advanced price for tueir fertilizers, as the advance in sugar this year has given them an improved market.

The ‘Southport, which has been running to Shaw’s Wharf, three times a week, is now in constant danger of going ashore. vessels, laden with produce, came down the river at a creat risk, since the buoys were removed ; and we are informed that three other ves- sels are ready to go up to load, and will go if the owners care to run the risk. Kiepromanra.—This disease has appeared in this city and has spread considerably dur- ing the past week. ‘Two cases are reported. One young man afilicted with it, entered a well-known jewelry store a few days ago and —whether under the influence of the disease or not—pocketed a quantity of jewelry with- out being detected by the clerk. The goods were missed by the proprietor of the store, who gave a description of them to a young man—a disinterested person—who informed him that he had seen goods of the description given with the ‘‘Kleptomaniac.” As _ the Kleptomoniac has very respectable connections the jeweller did not wish to {proceed agamst him. He theretore informed the ‘‘disinterest- ed person” that if they were returnedhe would ‘keep mum.” Accordingly they were. Another young man is known to have com. mitted several petty larvenies. He is also afflicted with the disease; but, singular to say, he has not returned the goods taken,
