Sizn,— Permit me through the columns of | your valuable journal, to give publicity to| a very interesting meeting which was held in the Mill View School House on Tuesday last. Several of the most intelligent young men of Milk View and vicinity aessmbled together to diseuss the propriety of organ- izmg @ literary eociety, which, while it would help to pass)away the long winter evenings in a pleasing and enjoyable man- ner, would tend also to their mutual in- struction. The meeting was opened by the appointment of John A. Smith as chair- man and the undersigned as secretary. | The new. society received the name of **The Mill View Literary Insitute.’ The following officers were clected:—

The President Vite-President and Secre- tary were appointed a committes to frame by-laws'for tlie Tnstitute. After the busi- ness was over, speeehifying began, when speeches, short and good, were delivered by John A. Smith, Wm. Grant, Jr., Patrick *. Doyle, and. others, many sharp shots being fired and returned with good effect, audrmany brillant scintillations of wit dis- layed. The meeting dispersed by sing- ing ““God Save the Queen ” ; not, however, before a vote of thanks had been tendered the chairman.

And yet David| Mills said the Pacific railway would not | pay. There have been eeveral | secessions| among members of the Hebrew faith in| Montreal, on account of a difference of | views, some being inclined to advance in a} modern fashion, and others to stand by the old lines. The latest withdrawal and estab- lahment of a new synagogne is by thove holding the most primitive principles.
