They take to themselves the credit for being smart enough to escape. when often their escape is pure luck.

Now Little Stripes was no long- er so easily frightened as he had been. He was thinking very well of himself. very well indeed. ”No one is going to catch me," "l'm too smart for that. I can take care of myself. I fooled that Reddy Fox. He thought he was going to get me. but he didn't. I guess he .won't try again in a hurry."

'. Now his escapcfrom Roddy Fox had bceii pure luck. It was not due in the least to any smartness Ion the part of the little Chip- munk. Raddy had jumped on one ,0? the little spears of Prickly iPorky the Porcupine when he 'jumped for Little Stripes. At the time Little Stripes had been too Jrightened to move.

One day Little Stripes got up very early in the morning. He usually didn't get up early in the morning. but this time he got up extra early. It was hardly day- light. In fact, jolly round bright Mr. Sun was just getting out 'of bed behind the Purple Hills. He had just kicked off his rosy blan- kets to start his daily climb up in the blue, blue sky

Little Stripes ran out to get his breakfast. He was so early he was sure that none of those who hunt by day would be up yet. So in- stead of putting only his head side his doorway and looking and listening before coming wholly out. he ran right out. He ran almost under the paws of Black Pussy the Cat who had come over from Farmer Browns house to hunt in the Green Forest Of all those 'who hunt none is so hated by the little folk of the Green Forest and the Green Meadows. Other furred and feathered folk hunt those smaller than themselves because they need them for food. Black Pussy never needs to hunt for food. He hunts just for fun. That is hateful bus- iness.

Being too pleased with himself had led Little Stripes straight in- to the worst kind of danger.

West's opening diamond bid was a little too light even at match- Point Play. but it would have worked out very well if West had shown the proper imagination dur. ing the play.

West might have considered opening the ace and Jack of spades. but. as he ex- plained later, West "wanted to stay back of declarer with those Cards.” and so he led from his own diamond suit. South captured Eaxtls jack with the queen and Simply exited by playing the ace and six of diamonds.

West was now back on lead. with the diamond ten, and he still felt that South must have some- thing in spades for his notrump bid, so he now shifted to a low heart. South false-carded the nine on East's ace. and put in the heart ton on East's return of the heart five. West took the trick with the queen and: thinking that he could establish another heart trick for his side, continued the suit. South. however. won with the heart king. cashed the ten, and then boldly led a spade!

Whcn West put in the spade jack, dummy ducked. and East did likewise. Wcst then cashed the spade ace and the high dia- mond, but he was now forced to lead a club up to.South's tenacc. Thus South won riln all) two hcart tricks, two diamonds and
