Inventor Keeley.

A CROWD AY HIS WORKSHOP TO WITNESS His WONDERFUL INVENTIONS.

Inventor Keeley’s workshop was crowded with curiosity seekers to-day. The “Interetheric Liberator” and the latest engine were the attractions. ‘The former stood upon a pedestal and rested upon a bed of plate glass one inch in thickness, It was eoanected to the engine by fine steel tubes, and the aper- ture, through which the power was transmitted, was about as large as a goed sized needle is thick, The engine consisted of 2 sphere resting upon two uprights. At one end of the axle wasa small pulley, over which the belt passed. The entire apparatus was apart, and the various pieces were strewn over the floor when the gentlemen entered. Mr. Keeley proceeded to put the “liber- ator” together in their presence, and a half hour was coasumed in this. At

about 3 o'clock the inventor admitted & pint of air into a wrought steel tube and this was then passed into the

“liberator,” where its power was multi- plied fifteen times ina second. The air was passed through the vibrators and intensified and there stored ia a wrought steel cylinder. The gauges showed a pressure of 8,500 pounds to the square inch, and the tubes seemed to expand. The engine was started and run for an hour or more. Planks were put under it and pressed against it to decrease the speed, but there was no perceptible lessening of the revolutions. After this a level was lifted with two stout gentle- men sitting upon it, and the guages showed a pressure of 22,000 pounds. ‘he power was applied to a cannon about an inch and a half bore, and the bullets were spattered like so much mud upon an iron target. Mr, Keeley said that in about two months he expected to have his completed engine, now build- ing, ready. Then he would take out his patents, and his work would be finished. He said he had full contre} of the great power and could use it at will. i ail Against Piano Playing.

For some time past the Berlin cho has been taking the lead in a movement for getting up 4 great petition to the authorities against the nuisance of piano practising, from which it seems that the Berliners suffer greatly. The object of the petition is to induce the police to fix a certain number of hours inthe day durisg which alone it will be allowable to disturb the neighbour- hood by pounding on the piano. Since the moverent started the columns ofthe Echo have been overflowing with the letters of adhesion and demands for printed forms of the petition. Several papers declare that ‘Berlin is on the eve of a musical civil war.” Meanwhile it is asserted that in another partof Germany a young lady has actuaily been fined by the magistrates for disturbing her neighbours with violent playing on the piano. They manage these things better abroad.
