Very SuccessruL..—The Wesley Mission Band Social held last night was largely at- tended, and well conducted throughovt, The several parts of the programme were excellently rendered. The dialogue by members of the band was a apecially attractive part of the entertain- ment. The Williams piano used on the oceasion was from the establishment o! Messrs. J. F. Willis & Co. After the entertainment there was a general move towards the parior of the church and the refreshment room. In the parlor an at- tractive display of fancy articles was taste- fully arganged for exhibition and sale. The ladies in attendance at the refreshment and candy tables were kept busily engaged at- tending upon their numerous patrons, who expressed great satisfaction at the way in which their wants were supplied. We understand that the neat sum of $60 was netted.

Fime.—The stable and coach house of James Beales, Ea}, situate ia the rear of his pre- mises, corner of Grafton and Great George Streets, was destroyed by fire last night be tween eleven and twelve c’c'ock. A valuable cow, sleigh, wegon, robes, etc.,, as well asa quantity of hiy and straw, were also de- stroyed: How the fire started is a mystery; but it is supposed to be the work of aa incen- diary. The servant girl was in the stable milking at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and be lore re'urning to the house she fixed up things for the night and barred the door in the usual way. When th fire was discovered, about half-past eleven, it Was so far advanced that nothing in the building exuld be sived, The fireme 1 were quick!y on han 1, and, thanks to their efforts aud the plentiful supply of water available, the fire, which at one time threat- ened the neighLoring buildings, was soon ex- tinguished. Orrawa, April 15.

Sit John Thompson's bill amending the criminal law occupied the attention of the House all the afternoon—verbal amend- ments suggested by the lawyers being made to several clauses reserved from the pre- vious occasion.

Hon. Peter Mitchell gave uotice that on the third reading he would move to strike out the clsuse protecting female em. - ployes in factories and elsewhere again’t offences by their employers or foremen. He objected that the clause gave tov great facilities for blackmail.

In the evening the tariff was discussed in Committed of Ways and Means. Discus- sion was resumed on the item respecting the flour duty, which was passed, and the succeeding items were next taken ufe There was a warm discussion on the duty ot 40 cents per barrel on apples, Armstrong, Somerville, Cartwright and others holding that this was calculated to induce the States to impc3e a duty which would shut out the Canadian apples from that conntry. Bowell, Wallace and Boyle pointed out that our apple export to the States was only one-fuuth of that to Great Britain, and that almost the entire export of Canadian apples to the States was for ex- portation to Great Britain. They showed that the McKinley Bill submitted before our tariff was brought down proposed a tax of 25 eeuts per bushel on Canadian apples. The debate upon the apple duty was con- tinued until 1 a. m., when it passed.

On the item for blackberries, goose- berries, raspberries and strawberries, three cents per pound. Hon. Mr. Bowell stated that the weight of the small packages in which the berries were contained would be dutiable andjnot the crates. After some dis- cussion the item passed. The House ad- juurned at 1.45 a. m,

News From Halifax. Hawirax, April 15. To-day the Legislative Council refused to abolish itself. The Legislature was prorogued this after- noon. A St. John’s, Nfid., cable says: Messrs. Winter, Morine and Scott have been ap- pointed delegates toGreat Britain re French fisheries trouble. Messrs. Green, Q. C., Morrison, (Barrister), and Bowers, editor of the Colonist, have been appointed dele- gates to Canada. The latter leave next week ; the former in May. The Govern- ment will also send delegates to England.

Ottawa Notes. Orrawa, April 15.

The Deputy Minister of Marine has re- ceived word from England that the im- perial bill making it compulsory for all ves- sels leading in Great Britain to adupt a standard load line, has been amended, leaving it optional for vessel-owners ta adopt Lloyds’ register or the standard fixed by the Bureau Veritas.

The committee on alien labor met aga n this morning and presented their report whicn willbe placed before Parliament. The com- mittee recommend that the attention of the authorities at Washington be called to the oppressive application of the alien labor law of the States. They also recommend that Bill No 89, Mr. Taylor’s, be deferred in order to give an opportunity for these representatives to be made and if such re- presentatives fail to do good that some measure dealing with the grievance com- plained of be taken into consideration at the next session of this Parliament.

Pastor Whitman Persecuted.

A Joliet, [ll.,despatch says : The scandal of the First Baptist Church is the talk of the toyn. Rev. Dr. Whitman, the pastor, states that he is the victim of a malicious persecution ; that after being exonerated here the dissenters sent malicious reports to his old home in Charlottetown, P. E. L., and that when he went there after his letter he was confronted with charges of gross immorality by Deacon Vance, Choriver D. M. Stiles and ex-Pastor J. W. Conley ; that on receiving this information, they brought up an old blackmailing scaudal and found him guilty and refused him a letter. The pastor has produced strong letters of endorsement, and the majority of the Church sustain him and are of the opinion that he is a greatly persecuted man, while a few maintain that he should be not only innocent, but above suspicion.
