Point of View A tribute to Trudeau

On Wednesday, February 29, 1984, Prime Minister Pierre Eliot Trudeau ended all speculation, and announced his resignation as Leader of the Liberal Party. It was the end for a Titan in Canadian politics. \ ,

Pierre Trudeau will be best remembered by the Canadian public for his uniqueness and the dynamics he brought to federal politics. '

He was a man who possessed a, superior-intellect, strong will, and mdre importantly, he played a dominant role in Canadian politics for the past sixteen years.

He was a man who was despised by many and loved by many. He was his own man and proved totally unpredictable to his enemies, allies, and the media. ~

Such a powerful man, with such an imposing character, will resign in the minds of Canadians for'sOme years to come.

Some of Mr. Trudeau’s greatest accomplishments as a statesman were: guaranteeing French Canadians, of a rightful place in Canada; bringing home'ou’r first made-in-C nada constitution; invoking, for: the firs't'time 'in’peacetiriiefi‘the War Measures Act'in 1970; beginning hispeace crusade; and invoking wage and price controls in 1975. ,

Whatever Our feelings on'these accomplishments, they are one man’s contribution toward the evolution of Canada’s future.

Canadians will truly miss Pierre Trudeau. His towering dominance within the Liberal Party will not be forgotten overnight.

He will be missed for his contrariness, independence, bux

, most importantly, for the style and flavor which he gave to

Canadians and to politics in general.

The race to, succeed Pierre Trudeau is now on.

The fore-runner in the dash is John Turner, who will officially announce his decision on March 16.

We should expect to see at least ten prominent Liberals ir the race to capture the top job in the country. Whatever Trudeau chooses to do, Canadians can rest assured he will make the best of it.
