TORONTO. (CF) - An attrac- tive mother kllled herself and four young children early Tuesday af- ter scribbling a note telling her husband she didn't want to spoil his life.
-Mrs. Adele Holmes, a 36-year- old "model mother", was found gassed with her children when the husband, William, returned from work. The four jets of a kitchen stove were wide open. In an upstairs bedroom were the bodies of Nancy, 7, Irene, 6, Linda, 4. and Kenneth, Ii.

Police said this note, addressed to the 40-year-old husband, was beside Mrs. I-lolmes' body:
"Bill: Mom said you'd be bet- ter off without me. I love you too much to spoil your life. Sell out and go away. You'll have a chance now to get out of debt. It is wonderful to have you love me.
"God forgive me, Bill. Your mom struck me and I struck her back. I'm sorry. They'll be glad to be rid of me because you're mine now."

Mrs. Holmes cooked supper for the children, and put them away. She care- fully put the children's hair in pin curls and tucked three of them into bed.
Then she returned to the kitch- en, turned on the jets, and car- ried Linda to the bedroom. The ithree older children were found in
their bunk-beds. Linda and her mother wers sprawled on the floor.
Holmes said he had been sav- ing his money since he and Adele were married in Windsor, Ont., in 1943. Last month they bought the neat three-storey home. A television set and a big new re- frigerator came next.
They bought the new gas range two weeks ago.

Pownal Y. P. U., who in the past few years have staged many out- standing plays, have come through with another successful one. This play which was presented for the first time in Pownal Hall. on Fri- day evening, May 1st, before a large audience, is a four-act com- edy-drama "Happy Valley", and is directed by their minister, Rev. T. R. Goudge. This play has some- thing to please everyone, comedy, pathos, heartbronk and even trag- cdy. Each player presented his or her part in ri very realistic way. which provided a very interesting evening's entertainment. This play will be presented at various other halls, and also a repeat perform- nnce in Pownal, later this month.
A feature of this play is the magnificent scenery used in the last three acts, which is a garden scene. and was painted by Mr. Athol Bucll, .1 member of tlie Y. P.U. A great deal of praise is due this young artist for this mog- niflcent piece of work.

VICTORIA. (CF)-The top award of the Dominion Drama Festival was won - a Montreal group, which presented a play written .espccially for the young Canadian playwright.
The play is itzone", written by Marcel Dube of Montreal and pre- sented Saturday night by Lu Jeune Scene of Montreal. It is a French- language play, one of two in the festival, and concerns clgnret smuggling.
Governor-General Massey was scheduled to present the top award. the Calvert Citp, at a. ceremony here Sunday.
Adjudicator Pierre Lefevre an- nounced "Zone" as the winnerjust half an hour after he finished judging it. It was the last presen- tation of the festival
Before his aniioimcement. Mr. Lrfevre. said he found the stand- ard. choice and presentation of the eight plays. all winners of regional festivals, ”very exciting."
Mr. Lefcvre said he chose ”Zone" from a group of three plays which he thought were the best of the festival. The others were:
"The Madwoman of Chaillot,"by the Ottawa Little Theatre Satur- day Players, and "The Family Re- union", by the Toronto University Alumnae Dramatic Club.
Won All Awards
The three performances took all other awards. Best actor and win- her of the Henry Crbome Trophy was Robert Rivard for his por- trayal of Passe-Partout in the winning play.
The Nella Jeffries Award for the best nctress went to Andrea Cun- ningham, ”Mme. Constance", the madwoman of Pnssy in "The Mad- woman of Chaillot."
The Saturday Night plaques for the best supporting actor and act- ress went to Ruth Addlemnn, who played Irma in the "Madwoman" and Bruce Swardfagcr, the ”Rag- picker" of the some play.
Herbert Whittaker was awarded the Louis Jouvet. Trophy for his direction of "The Fnmily Reun- ion".
"The Family Reunion" also won the festival award for the best English-language play and the Martha Allen Trophy tor the best visual presentation.

He said he picked the best play by thinking what he would remem- ber best tlirec months hence.
One reason for the award was the fact the play was written for the cast by a member of the cast, Mr. Lefevrc said. The play had been created by the cast from nothing to a production on the stage.
