As some one has said, ‘They are the true aristocrats of in- sects,’’ the kings of their kind.

Learned savants and researchers tell us that the most primitive of cockroaches are found deep down in what are known as the silurian rocks, which were formed such countless ages ago that they don’t attempt to count them at all. They were not very unlike their lineal descendants of today, the principal difference being as to their wings, and it is probable that should one of these ancient creatures be in some way resurrected and go scurrying across the kitchen floor it would be stepped on with as little thought and compunction as are its modern kindred. In The Century there is an article on “Heroes Who Fight Fire’? by Jacob A. Riis in the series of “Heroes of Peace.”’ Mr. Riis says:

Doubtless there is something in the spec- tacular side of it that attracts. It would be strange if there were not. There is ev- erything in a fireman’s existence to en- courage it. Day and night he leads a kind of hair trigger life that feeds naturally upon excitement, even if only as a relief from the irksome idling in quarters. Try as they may to give him enough to do there, the time hangs heavily upon his
