started from Derby, February 6th, walked to Liverpool and worked their way to Boston on the steamer Cepha)- onia. They shoveled coal, and, not being used to such work, had a hard voyage. Their walk began from Boston on March 17th. The route was through Worcester, Springfield, Troy, Albany, Binghamton, Elmira, os Lock Haven, Bellefonte, Tyrone, Altoo- na and Johnstown.
Their experiences have been exceed- ingly varied. Mr. Grey says his warm- est reception was in Binghampton, and his chilhest in Johnstown. In Albany he met Gov. Flower and other state officials, and has their autographs in his logbook. In some towns they were en- tertained in the best hotels. In others they slept in deserted buildings.
Since the breakdown of his comrades, Mr. Grey has enjoyed only the com panionship of his dog Jack. This sturdy and faithful animal is a Prussian boar- honnd, a present from Gen, Wolseley.
Mr. Grey slept Sunday night in the signal tower near Brinton Station, and walked in along 5th Avenue to the Court-house yesterday forenoon. He says he was greatly surprised by the size of Pittsburg. He had no idea it was nearly as largea city.
At the Court-house his arrival was at- tested by Sheriff Richards by an entry in the logbook, and Mr. Grey was then treated to a substantial dinner, the first meal since Sunday morning.
He was found out by some of the newspaper men and _ entertained for several hours. Then he was taken to the Central Hotel, where he was hospit- ably received by Proprietor John Rowan and Clerk Harry Ulam and given agood room. Jack was taken to the kitchen, given ample food and acom- fortable place to sleep. The walking journalist will remain in Pittsburg to- day, and set out for Cincinnati some time to-morrow. He is suffering with asprained knee, the result of slipping on a wet railroad tie.—Pittsburg Dis- patch.

It may not be very generally known, writes a Washington correspondent, that observations are to be made simul- taneously at Washington and at Manila, in the Philippine islands, which is almost directly opposite Washington on the other side PP the globe, to sea what is the matter with the axis of our little planet. Observations show that for some time the earth has not been re- volving on that important, if imaginary, support, as she has done for centuries, and scientists have decided that it is time to find out, if possible, what it all means. Those who have studied the subject declare that, if the variations continue, m the course of some very long and very indefinite period we shall have an Arctic climate at Washington, and the latitude of every place on the globe will be changed, and all our geo- graphies will be useless. An equatorial telescope has been finished and sent to Manila, and before long diligent in-,uiry will be made into the whys and where- feres of the peculiar performances of old Mother Earth
While one set of scientists are trying to find out about the axis another party is endeavoring to find ont why the mag- netic needle varies so, as these variations of the needle affect not only the mariner, | but real estate owners, and in large | cities where every foot is valuable this is not to be overlooked. Thege lat- ter observations ure being made by the seodetic and coast survey and will not be completed for several years.

COAL TRAINS MOVING,
Five Hundred State Troops Mave a Desir- able Effect on the Strikers.
An Indiana despatch of June 3rd says : The state troops marched into Clark sta- tion this morning five hundred strong, with a Gatling gun, but only about fifty miners were there to face the music. The militia was drawn up in line along the edge of the woods, and Sheriff Leming, after reading the warning against the min- ers for riotous conspiracy, placed three of the leaders, Squire Summers, Dick Gate and John Flynn, under arrest. The pris- oners were brought to this city this after- noon and placed in jail. As soon as the troops were in line the railroad men at once repaired the track, and the loaded cars which had been held were taken on westward.
The thousand miners who were report- eden route for Clark’s station did not materialize this morning, neither had they collected at any point along the Baltimore and Ohio Southern. The certainty that the officera intended to enforce the law seemed to quell the rebellious feeling among the men. The miners say that as soon as the troops are withdrawn they will stop all coal cars, but, anticipating this, two companies will be stationed at Clark’s until all fear of trouble has passed. Trains
