The Faculty Association of UPEI has received pledges in excess of 2,500 dollars for its scholarship fund. One third of this amount has already been collected.

The fund, known as the UPEI Faculty Association student Achievement Fund, will consist fo five campaigns over 10 years and will have collected 250,000 dollars by the end. The first campaign is over and has reached its goal. "we think it was a successful initiative," said Prof. Andy Robb, chairman of the campaign committee.

Although over 8,000 dollars have been collected, scholarships will not be immediately available. "We could award eight 1,000 dollar scholarships,‘ but what will that get us?" saystaculty Association President Professor Ron-Collins. "The idea is to award income not principle. However, we will probably be awarding the first Scholarship next

ear." ’

y The fund is being collected solely from faCulty members and administrative staff. Each individual makes a pledge and it is deducted from that person's paycheck. The fund receives one monthly check from the payroll clerk covering the pledged amounts. Earl Nicholson, at the end of theryear, receives the deduction slips and makes out receipts for the donors. . .

The fund will be for students attending UPEI. As of yet, no considerations have been made as

to who should receive the scholarships. The

:method of giving them out has not been decided either. I ’

"The Faculty Association could appoint a sepaeate committe to award the scholarships,"

Committee of UPEI could administer the fund." The fund is aimed at scholarships right now but the long range plan may include bursaries

'and donations to the library. But that won't

be until the goal of 250.000 dollars has been reached.

"And after getting up that high we plan to hit cprporate donors," adds Professor Collins.

These scholarships will not mean that the

'regular university scholarships will be cut back. _"We look at it as an extension and augmenting

of university‘scholarships." This means more money will be available to UPEI students in the near future.

At a time when students are wondering whether University is worth it, it is comforting to know the faculty and administration believe it is.
