. civilization could not go on with- out plants. They provide mankind with clothing, medicines, food. drink and building materials at many kinds. From the plant king- dom comes rubbere for footwear and for the tires on our automo- lrlles.

The great ocean liner tied to their piers ere held not by cables made from the fibre of a humble plant. These are but a few of the uses to which we are indebted to the plants, and we could go on and inn without seeming to exhaust the let.

Take. for instance, the great coal deposits found In different parts of the earth. How did they get there? Well, to answer this quest- ion, we must go back to prehistoric times when the earth was covered with dense growth or vegetation. This decaying plnnt-llfe worked in- to the ground, later to form is solid substance, which in time was dug up and given the name of coal.

With the advance of alvlllullon. people began to cultivate many plants whose berries they knew were good to eat. Thus began man's first venture In agriculture, which has been carried on with marked success for thousands of years; but Nature still plays 3 mal- or role In producing things for men to reap. Take the mushrooms, for Instance; they spring up overnight and are to be had for the plclclmt.

In the South sea Islands and other places, the coconnut palm grows wlld, providing the natives with food and drink and sllcltr.-r; while In our own country may be found blackberries, strawberries, currants, blueberries, and many other small fruits that grow In or near the woods.

In pioneer days, these berries provided the settlers with fruits III seasons, but when large sections were opened up for forming, these berries became scarccr every year so that In time the inhabitants be- gun to cultivate them. '

The growing or the various kinds of cereals dates back to ancient times, and are to be found in one farm or another all over the world. We must not forget the sap of certain trees such its the mnple which, when boiled. produces a sugar at good quality.

To flavor our foods, we use cin- namon, pepper. cloves. nutmeg nnd neveml other spices. nll of which come from plants. In olden times, these spices were used more freely than In our dny---why? Because heavy splclng of food helped to keep It from spoiling. It also served as is disguise for the bad taste or food thnt had taken on n tnlnt.

Even the daily beverages used to was); down our meals come from plants. The curious one-ccllod plants that multiply rapidly are used for the making of bread and are called yeasts. All breweries use yeasts In the manufacture of beer and ales. Then there's the tiny bacteria plants, some of which go to work in our cream to prepare It for churning.
