the dwelling house of Mr. Patrick Whelan, at Freetown, was destroyed by fire last Thursday morning, The house was burned
to ashes, very little, if anything, being gxved from it. In fact Mr. Whelan had a hard time to get his children out of the
burning building. The neighbors gathered as soon as possible after the fire was dis- by their efforts saved the The loss on Mr. Whelan’s house is estimated at from $609 to $700, with, it is said, some imsurance on the building. The Disastrous Cyclone.
Lewiston, July 9.
‘Specials to the Lewiston Journal, from Somerset, Waldv, Oxford and Franklin Counties indicate that last evening’s cyclone was one of the most disastrous that ever visited Maine. Sandy River Railroad Bridge, near Phillips’, was blown from the abutments into the river. The bridge at North Anson was twisted so as to make it unsafe for trains. In various parts of Maine nearly 100 barns were blown down or unroofed.

All lasters employed at Master's & Walker's shoe factory here quit work yes- terday. ‘The firm has been a third grade factory and the lasters claim that goods of the second grade were introduced with no advance in price. A _ new price list with au advance was declined by the firm. The men were ordered out by the Lasters Pro- tective Union.
