deck, and discovered to be an enormous sea snake, lying on the water, moving upand d wn with the swell of the waves. The body had a reddish tinge, and the head was exactly thatoft a snake. The lowest estimate of its lenvth is given by Dr. Dawson as 100 feet. with a thik kness of two men’s bodies. The schooner was put about, a nearer aequuintance not being desir able. At the moment of putting aboat,
the monster, aroused probably by the poise of the flapping of the sails, reared head into the air. Large black strokes were then seen upon the bead aad neck, while the mouth opened, and

ashdrp hissing sound, as of escaping steam. followed. The elevation Was about 15 feet, the head turned toward the boa The mouster then plunged,
and the body disappeared vider the water with great rapidity. The three geatieman above mentio.ed have made a declaration under oath to the above effect, betore George du Berger, Esq. the Prothonotary of this district. The French boatman has not yet done so, bit his story agrées* substantially with that of the others.

The New York police inspector was asked “Why people steal,’ and he res- ponded :—

According to his ability he ranks in that as in a!] other trades. Some steal great sums, others smail; very few keep anything. A common fate awaits them all. All thieves gambles and waste the money they steal. Plenty of them never ‘work’, unless they are two-thirds drunk; along with almost every report of burglary comes the story of whisky bottles left behind—evidence that the thieves re- quired stimulants to give them courage. When jtheir money is drunk up or gumbled away they have no alternative but tosteal. They rarely attempt it tilldriven. The tools and money are furnished by a class of men who, with- out participating in the actual crime, find the funds and yet a percentage if the ‘trick’ successful. What the thief himself gets, be it much or little, goes always the same way.”
