Vancouver Canucks in Fifth Place In League

VANCOUVER. Jan. 22-(CP)- The flexible. rebounding Portland Eagles, bolstered by a. new goalie, aren't ready to be scratched from the Pacific Coast Hockey League roster of contenders.

Eagles. in the cellar a week ago. climbed into fourth place last. night with I 3-1 victory over Vancouver Crmuc-ks, who dropped to fifth.

Eagles left the cellar only last Thursday when they measured Tacoma Rockets B-3. They were liolstered by Al Miller. B. goalie enquired from Detroit Red Wings. 1-ie replacd Tom Karakas.

Saturday night Portland finally managed to win a game on Tacoma ice. It was the first time this has happened since January. 1949. The score was 2-1.

The most immediate threat to New Westminster Royals, however. is posed by Victoria Cougars. In sec- ond place. the Cougars rolled up an undefeated streak of eight: games before it was snapped 6-1 Saturday night by the Royals. '

ers will get a bit of a breather this week and with the exception of in home game here on Wednes- day night against saint John Beavers, will not have to hit. the road until Friday when they will start out on their regular week- end playing tour. On Friday they will go to Moncton -where they will meet llawks and fi'cm there twill continue on to Saint John for 1H Saturday night game against Beavers.

At least. that is the way it is as far as actual Big, Four competition is concerned. but doesn't mean that they will be inactive. The Maritime Flying Curlers completed another successful on- nunl trip early Monday morning when they flew in from Montreal' enroute from Chicago. It was the third such venture of this unique organization.

Enroute to Chicago the curlers were delayed a day in Toronto. Arriving on Monday they scarcely had I spare moment until Friday as their hosts went all out to en- tertain them and provide compet- ition on the curling lanes. The first two days were spent in Ohi- cago where I. series of matches were played resulting in 1. win for the home club, but only after the final match had been decided.

On Wednesday txwo rinks ac- cepted an invitation to Madison. Wisconsin, and on Thursday four rinks played in Milwaukee. Friday was a free day and the curlers left on return Saturday.

The curlers reported 11 wonder-

ful tlme and made many new friends as well as renewing old ones.

Tonight at Crystal Rink the R. C.A.l-1. Meteors will play host to the Summerside Crystals and the airmen are more than anxious to avenge the 5-3 defeat handed them by the Sohurman-Phillips aggre- gation last Saturday night.

it is certain the ice will be in excellent condition for tonight's tussle and the Meteors figure that with a good sheet of ice some of their boys will skate rings around the Crystal defence. The Crystals can't. see it that way. however, and they are out to prove that they have the numbers of the boys in blue no matter what the ice con- ditions arc.

The 1-zrmer Charlottetown player. who led the league last season. put on a terrific splurge against Hali- fax last night to rack up eight. points with three goals and five iisslsts, to unseat Bruno "Red" Fav- ero of Islanders, who led up until last nlgiht. Whitlock now has 86 points made up cf 36 goals and 50 assists, while Favero. who picked up one assist against Moncton here last night. has 28 goals and 66 as- sists for 84 points. two down on Whitlock.

They are still the same old luck- less R.C.A.F. hockey team which -they were the two last seasons. The Meteors failed to win I game last season. and although they beat the Crystals in II. pre-season exhibition tilt this year. iihey have failed to win so far in Ii league -game, having one tie and two losses to their credit. Frank-ly, we can't see why they don't chalk up some victories. They are a hustling aggregation. and seem to have some pretty fair puck- sters on their line-up. Bad ice may be cramping their style 1 bit, and they may improve when the ice does. We'd like to see the redhead. Mulviihlll, on really fast ice. We'll bet tihree lumps of sugar the skates around some of the boys who are stopping him on the mixture of mud. slush and ice wihich tlhe boys have been lllaylnl their games on to date.

A lady coach of a midget team in Halifax thus been in touch with Jimmie Hogan. Physical Fitness Director for Prince County. with 9. view to arranging a game in Summerside with the midget team here. The fact that iihere arelno trains or buses leaving the Island on Sunday presents an obstacle to the Halifax team's coming here as the lady in charge does not want her charges to miss any school ciinses. She suggested the E115- lcr holidays as a possible time to arrange the game, presuming that we had artificial lee here. Maybe she'll read the article about "The Richest Town In Canada."
