Steel Records Broken in U.S.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Steel consumption is breaking rec- ords and output promises to ex- ceed that of record 1955, but competition among producers is sharper than it has been since the 1958 recession. Steel mags- zme reports.

Steelmakers have cut prices selectively and geographically, but they're holding the price line in general, the metalwork- ing weekly says.

Quality, delivery and servxce are being stressed by steel producers in fighting for their share of the market.

The magazine adds that steel producers always have “treated their automotive accounts well, but the attention they're giving automakers and most other cus- tomers treat- ment seem casual."

It says that automobile nun- ufacturers want fast deliverch so that they can keep their raw material‘suppiies at minimum’ working levels.
