A new program funded by CanadaImmigrationand — sponsored by the Multicultural Council was started in 1991. This program serves to match volunteers from 4 the community with New Canadians forthe purpose — of support and friendship.

‘New Friends’ provides the Canadian Connection that immigrants to Canada need in order to reduce the stress of adjusting to anew country and ease their feelings of loneliness and isolation. The volunteer provides friendly support and opportunities forlan- guage practice within social context.
