A short time azo I wrote you on the subject of our oyster outpu’, aud Iam now glad to say that the result has been that our fishermen have placed much better goods, and have secured a much higher price than in previous vears. Al! our deal- ers have made a much better profi; on their shipments, and the Charlottetown stock has largely increased in the favor of outside buyer?, and I find that my letter has been read and carefully considered by a large number of Islauders witt favorable effects.
1 now wish to call your attention to the next item in season, viz., smvelts. This is a product of considerable extent to a large number of our country people,—and the season is now pear at haad.
Our market for this item depends en- tirely on the United States. Last year they were admitted free of duty, whereas this year under the new law known as the Dingley tariff bill they will be seul ject to a duty of | of a centper Ib. equal to $15 per ton, which isavery serious item in the shipment of fresh smelts.
Now, how are we toget overthis ? There
is @ way that will make this duty tend to,
our a‘vantage. Let the fixhermen pack only the best goods, and feed their mail stuff tothe pigs. Manv farmers tell me thie pavs as well a shipping them. Pack all your best stock in good boxes of a uni- form size.
The box mast ‘be 16 inchee long 12 inches wide aad. inches deep, and will contain an average weight of 27 Ibs each. The size of the vox is an important item, as those goods nearly always go into celd storage at the other end; and besides this our I<land smelt# are jcassed as odd lote in Beaton and New York owing te the irregularity of Our packages and they cannot be clase with the straight lote and larger quantities that go from the New Brunswick shippers. The result is that our stock realues from lct to 3sts per pound, or from 25 per cent. to 50 per cent. leas than the stock from other wacers.
The packing into each bx of a tew small smeits« largely reduces the qnality of the whole lot, and it will pay our fi<her- men much etter to throw such emal! stuff away than to pack and sell them. The only way to overcome the new daty is to increase the valne of our pack, and *his can easily be done by proper care and the right boxes,

Tt appears that the St. Lawrence Water Power Company, who are building the hg wat-rcanal at Massena, had some diffi culty about the purchase of the Lockwood eatrte, Which was further complicated by the sale of the estate to D. W.C. Irwin, who put up “No Trespassing” notices and forbade the company’s men to build their railway acress his property. ‘The ccm- pletion of the read was urgent, as the company had a lotof heavy machinery awaiting transfer to the terminus of therr lioe.
