Do you ever notice that it seems to take longer to get to the mainland lately?

Not many people know this, but the distance actually did get increase. This is not some great geographical feat that happens once every million years, but merely the results of the ever separating country we live in. As any, and every, politician could, and did, tell us, the country is breaking, no crumbling, apart this very day. It seems that in this post-Meech era that we live in, the only thing we seem to hear is news on the separation problems Canada is having. I think that it is about time that we students become informed on this issue.

It all started in a place far far away (Meech Lake), in atime long long ago (1980 something) when some old and wise men gathered together to save our humble nation. It seemed that these men knew of some horrid fate that was about to come forth onto this land like a plague (or is that plaque) and destroy us all. These wise men decided to call this genocide “The Constitutional Crisis.’’

This started a great debate throughout the land, brother was fighting brother, neighbour was fighting neighbour, and the future seemed bleak. Was there a way to free our land from this grip of death? Yes, these old and wise men who gathered on the lake saw the saviour, and his name was Brian. Brian saw the way. Only he knew of the path to freedom and he shall lead us forth onto that path. He pulled the nation together and, with a snicker on his face, promised life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all; if only we sign on the dotted line.

It would appear that after spending tens of millions of taxpayers dollars, all that the conservative Government has managed to do is cause a constitutional crisis in the minds of every Canadian (except me) and to bring this crisis to the forefront of every newscast of the day. Why would the government make such an utter mistake as this? It is surprising but in this pre- election period, the Tory Government has actually been the wise old men we once thought they were. Before next years election you can bet that the Tories will suddenly come up with some miracle cure for this constitutional disease that they themselves created. It will be on this cure that the Tories will base their next platform, and it will be on this platform that the Tories will win the next election.

I know some people will view me as paranoid but I also know just how smart and powerful these political powers really are, after all, we voted them in.

Dear Editor,

Well the first two weeks of utter chaos is over and the shock of the reality of the workload should be wearing off. Unfortunately this year an extra shock hit many of the students on campus, a shock many were not prepared for. The 3% kick on our Student Loans has only added to the stress factor and the reality that student loans are not keeping up with inflation leaves many students wondering how to accomplish the all important degree.

Almost one-third of Canada’s 650,000 university and college students receive Canada Student Loans each year. The average loan is 2700. Prince Edward Island university students are eligible to receive about $5560 in either loans or bursaries, according toa
