The trial of Alexander Ceere, a Jehovah's Witness, for peddling without a license, which is being heard in the S merside Police Court before Stpendlsry Magis- trate Eli. Strong. K.C., is now adjourned till next Saturday when argument a! counsel will be heard.

The case for the defence was heard on Saturday morning, When court opened a change of collu- sel for the defence was announ- ced. Ml‘. W.E. Ddtby. K-G, was present and said that he had been retained by the accused and he asked that Mr, Glen How of Tor- unlo who had conducted the de- fence on Friday, be permitted to examine the accused. Tihls request W85 refused by the Court who stalled that he was not in favor of lawyers from other Provinces coming hcre and taking cases. Mr. '1‘.l... Compton who had been associated with the defence on Friday did not appear. _

T-he accused went on the stand ‘m his own defence and stated thlt he was a missionary and a mem- her oi‘ Jehovah's witnesses, When Mr. Darby sought to ask him uhnt was his purpose in being in Slummorside, Magistrate Strong ruled the questton not relevant. when Mr. Darby persisted and contended that the question was relevant the Magistrate recessed the courst twice, first for five minutes, then for ten minutes.

During the argument Mr. Darby withdrew hls,'wiiness from the stand but the witness returned to answer questions. Witness said he caiied/ on the people in their hrmcs to encourage Bible studies and he sometimes distributed lit- erature ior which on some occas- ions he received contributions. The witness stuled that some- times he gave the pamphlets 8W8)’ free. When asked how he main- tained himself, he said that be- fore he went into the work of preaching lull time ‘le had a little capital and he was using this iii?- Durlng the past two months he had received $14.40 as donations from people and had also receiv- ed $25 a month‘ frcm the organ- ization he represents.
