Mr. Coffin, a trustee of Cherry Hill School, next delivered an address on “The Teacher as 1 know him and as I see him.” It was very intersting and brim-full of witand humor and was much appre- ciated. (1) “At what age or grade should pupils begin to study history from a text book.” Mr. Egan would begin the

study of history with the fourth class. Inspector McCormack agreed with Mr. Egan. He thought

pupils should take up the study of The Brief History of England when they begin the Fourth Reader. As regards Canadian History he said we have a very poor text-book, a book that is in every way unsuited for our schools. The Inspecter said he would just as lief turn a grindstone all day as be compelled to wade through Clements, History for a few hours. He said the only benefit it might ever be mankind would be in time ofa flood for no matter what else would be submerged Clements’ History of Canada would still be dry.

He mentioned many mistakes usually made by young teach- ers. ‘Teachers should get the parents to visit the schools. Mr. Campbell and Mr. Leslie spoke on these papers. The committees next reported. Mr. Rice reported 56 niembers present. Mr. McLeod said his committee exam- ined the Byelaws and Constitution as framed by Inspector McCormac, and were well satisfied with them. McCormac spoke highly in favor of Miss Gillis’ arguments and thought that every teacher should endeavor at least to teach some singing. He recommend- ed to use of Miss Ryan’s “School Day Melodies,” published by T. C. Allen & Co., Halifax and sold at 15 cts, per copy. Mr. Egan favored a course of music and elocution for P. W. College. Mr. McCormac moved a_ hearty vote of thanks to Miss Gillis for her valu- able paper. The motion was second- ed by Mr. Egan andcarried unanimous | ly.

Mr. Brehaut read a paper entitled “The Study of Hygiene in Our Schools.” He showed that Hygiene is one of the most important subjects. He claimed that itdoes not receive the attention it should get. It is very much neglected in our schools. In most of the schools it receives very little attention. Mr. Egan thought all pupils should be taught this subject orally. The President remarked that the text-book of Scientific Temperance used in our school is almost worthless and that is the probable cause for the subject being neglected. Mr. McLure and Mr. McPherson also spoke on this subject,

Inspector McCormac then read a paper on the “ Qualifications of the Ideal Teacher.” great responsibility of the teacher, the qualities that go to make the true teacher, how it is of more importance that the pupil learn the right things from his teacher than that he learn anything from his books. A teacher must command the respect of his’ pupils. loving and patient. He emphasise truth as an essential element in the school and urged all teachers to im- press the beauties of truth on the minds of the pupils. The teacher should not teach morality through discipline but discipline through love.
