WE see that the Plain Dealer, published in New Glasgow, N. S., has for its editor and manager our esteemed young friend and fellow-citizen, William D. Tanten, son of Mr. William Tanton of this city. The Plain Dealer ia, as its name indicates, an uncompro- mising {supporter of the present Dominion Government. The articles are well written and to the point, We wish our young friend every success which his energy and enterprise merits. —COMMUNIGATED.

We learn that ex-Goverror Laird was made the tool of the Opposition, to effect a large attendance at the meeting on Tuesday night. The sattelites of the ‘‘ party ” made an active canvass among their friends—whether support- ers of Government or Opposition—and extend- ed to them a pressing invitation to attend the meeting—on personal grounds—as ex-Gover- nor Laird was going to speak. The attraction, however, was not very great, and ex-Gover- nor Laird’s speech was rough on the Opposition’s previous policy of drawing heavily from capital for transient improve- ments.

positionist meeting, oa Tuesday night, stated

that the West River district was ‘‘safe,” as |

far as his re-election was concerned. Having, therefore, alittle time to spare during the campaign, he will endeavor to assist his friends, whoever they are, in the Third District. It will be remembered that Mr. Farquharson was very confident of re-electica, by an overwheiming majority in West River, in 1878. He then sneered at his opponent, Mr. Bain, and bragged that he would not receive two votes in his own settlement. The election returns proved that Mr, Farquharson had only twelve of a majority over Mr. Bain, and this, notwithstanding the immense influence of Mr. Farquharson, in the south side of the district. Looking at this fact, Mr. Farqubarson’s spare time will be precious during the present campaign.

Tur Patriet complains that our reporter attended the Oppositionist meeting. Its editor was the only one there who objected to his presence. W.D. Stewart, Esq., in answer to these objections, stated that he wenld be glad to see the reporters of all papers present, as everything was done above board. Those in attendance coincided with Mr. Stewart, and immediately frowned down the efforts of Mr. Lawson to curb the Liberty of the Press, of which he is himself a member. . The editor of the Patriot at this meeting made arabid, ram- bling speech. Almost every statement he mage contained a criminal accusation against the Gov ernment. Beforeconcluding his tirade of abuse, however, Mr. Lawson addressed our reporter, —of whose presence at the meeting he so bitterly complains,—and asked if he would be kind enough to publish his speech in Tue Examiner. This, our roporter declined to do becaus@ he knew the editor of the Pat?iot was ous of temper at the ‘‘No Platform” cry, aud knew not whereof he spoke. Again the Patriot charges our reporter with acting as a spy. The eharge has no foundation in fact. Our reporter entered the meeting boldly, took @ prominent seat, and his presence was known to all. He was kindly invited by the Chair- man—Hon. Mr. Dodd—to address the meet- ing, but declined to make any lengthy remarks on the ground that the party had no ‘* plat-

orm” or ‘* policy” which could be discussed. Where, then does the charge of spy apply ?

ur reporter proved himself to be more use- ful at the meeting than the editor of the Patriot. In yesterday’s issue, he published a lengthy report of the proceediags which is substantially correct, and which, we learn, meets the appreval of the Opposition party, whereas the Patriot has not a line in reference to the success of the meeting. We therefore fail to see any just reasons for the Patriot’s complaint.
